Day 12 Got a call from the vet last night, he doesn't have worms! ;D And looks like the problem is somewhat fixing itself. However after having to leave him with my bf for a few days while I had to travel for a family funeral, he has now developed a more severe case of separation anxiety. When I got back to town yesterday and went to see him at my bfs he was lying in his crate barking, there was blood on the bars of his crate and a lot of bent bars. Then 15 minutes after I got there the cops came by because of a noise complaint cause he apparently barked all day while my bf was at work I'm gonna start working on alone training this weekend and he has a dog sitter for today as the neighbour that complained offered to watch him today for us.

Oh no, Separation Anxiety is no fun... check out training and behavior (or health and medical) for Laddie4's thread on separation anxiety with his new boy Miller. Miller was biting the bars too, but I dont think he was barking. He's doing much better after a long day of working on alone training. Good luck! Working with him will really help.

How have the last couple of days gone? Is he calming down a bit?

day 16 After having to leave Stryder for a few days at my bfs, he has finally settled down now that he's back home, and has started to eat again!!! (which makes me very happy as it was hard to see him not eating ) I am giving him an anxiety herbal product and I have been working on alone training with him for the last two days. Also sprayed his crate bars with bitter apple to help keep him from chewing - its a huge deterrent for my cats. Today will be the longest i've left him since I started the training. I guess in a way I don't know how the training is going. I left him for 45 min last night and I didn't hear him barking when I came back. Just keep working on differeing intervals when i'm not at work. I find it hard to look for the anxiety issues when they aren't always visible upon return. (ie: barking and crate biting) One of my neighbours though did agree to give a daily report card on him if she hears him bark at all and how long he does if it happens. I am going to keep working on the alone training and after a lot of reading I am working on making him learn to be more comfortable in his crate if i'm present or not. so when I left this morning he was all set with his kong, and the tv going.... will see how it goes in a few hours as i'm taking a half day to continue the alone training.

It sounds like the alone training is going to be crucial to getting him comfortable to being left alone. Just be patient - it will work out. You just have to remember that he spent his whole track life surrounded by lots of dogs, and activity and then went into a home with another greyhound - so he's not used to being left alone. Keep doing what you're doing. Good luck! Progress is just on the horizon

Thanks again for all the support. My neighbour said he only barked three times after I left this morning (although that was only before she left as well). But he seemed pretty calm when I got home and when I did my last alone training tonight he did some whimpering...but it only lasted a minute and then I came back. Making progress

Costco has nice beds at a reasonable price. The colors and styles vary depending on when you go.

hey amyunicorn. My sister picked this one up for me at Sams for $25 she said. We did pick one up from Costco last night for our dobbie for $20. Both are really nice though.
