After a year and a half we still have a bit of a problem with Chevy peeing in the house. I strongly believe it is behavioral at our place. Like Apollo, Chevy can hold it for several hours, usually over 8hrs but sometimes (not too often though) if we are busy and in and out alot or if the schedule has changed alot he will pee in the house ten minutes after being outside. Not too long ago right after our evening walk Chevy came down to the rec room where DH and I were watching TV and peed on the flippin' television - he just lifted his leg and peed right on the screen!!! Have you tried using belly bands? We have tried with Chevy but because his peeing is usually outta the blue it is hard to know when it is needed. I am glad Chevy came to our home because not everyone is able to cope with the frustration of coming home to pee seeping into the cracks of the hardwood floor...some days I find it hard but I look over at him and I just can't get angry...and he is getting so much better as time goes by. My first grey never let us know when he had to pee...he did not have a sign or signal. He would just hold it until we let him out. A few times the poor guy just licked himself to prevent himself from peeing in the house (ie drank his pee) before we realized he wouldn't approach us for a pee break! Good luck with Apollo.

...some days I find it hard but I look over at him and I just can't get angry.. I know what you mean... I have a hard time punishing Tigger for peeing in the house too. One time tho, he walked right over to our clean laundry basket, full of clothes I had just washed, lifted his leg and grinned.....

Thank you for all of your support. We had a trainer come to our house last nice. We hope that helps. We crated Apollo for two hours today,,,peed in the crate. We are going to try to limit his access to one room. Wish us luck. Gigi, we know that you tried. We hope that we have as much patience as you and your family.

I don't have a lot of advice to add, but it does strike me that peeing in front of you when he knows how to ask to go out seems like a test. Almost, "I wonder what will happen if I pee here." Edie did something similar a month or so after she arrived. She'd been out a couple of hours previously, she'd just had dinner, and she had to know that the next item on the agenda was a walk. She decided she wouldn't wait, she'd just pee in the dining room. Fortunately, I caught her, admonished her, and got her out. She hasn't made a mistake since. (I hope I'm not jinxing myself. )

We left Apollo alone for two hours yesterday, in a small room (with tile floors and a babygate to limit access). We gave him a BIG Kong with lots of treats inside...He did not pee. I know...it's only one day...do you recommend the belly band? If yes, were do we get one. Also, the name of our dog trainer is John Fowles, 416-656-7240. "the dog watch". He resides in T.O. He has a greyhound and uses a very positive/food reward based program. He was so nice and hopeful. We will be using him again. He also does dog walking.

Any progress is progress!!! I'm glad he didn't have an accident! The kong toy is a good idea too, I wish our guys would play with them. All Zooks likes is stuffies and paper towels! Good luck with Apollo, it sounds like things are getting better.

We used to give him a Kong and he loved it!! He would carry it everywhere. As for Belly Bands - actually I am making them (a small business thanks to Apollo!). I will be at the GLOHW event on Sept 23rd and 24th with Jenn from Stylish Hound Sue D.O.G. DOg on the Go

I don't want jinx us, but we've gone 8 days now without an accident and today we left Apollo for 4.5 hours. Lets hope the progress continues.
Apollo has become much more settled now that we are in a regular routine and he knows what is expected of him. We're be seeing a trainer on a regular basis (who happens to own a greyhound), and Apollo is responding well.
We'll keep you posted on his progress.

Say Hi to John for me(Maria) I was his greyhound's foster mom ;D I still chuckle from memories of Charger/Jazz head butting me outside in the yard while I was doing poop patrol John's beautiful boy

They are a band (the ones I make are 6 inches wide) that goes around a male dog's private parts - and are fastened with Velcro. they help to train for marking and peeing in the house. if the dog pees on them it gets wet obviously and they don't like to be wet. Each dog will respond differently though as with all things.

I really wish I had heard about those a few months ago. We have now had to pull up all the carpets in the house! We seem to be doing OK with the housebreaking now, but if we have a relapse, I will definately be in touch! I should have looked at the forum from day 1, it has been so nice to hear that we are not alone with our problems. Thanks.

Well we left the two of them at home alone for the first time today for 4 hours. Valerie peed in the living room. We are also wondering if it is because it is the first time we left them alone for that long since we brought them home 3 days ago. The other problem is they are chewing our wooden chair in the living room. They have toys but they seem to prefer the wood. Is there anything that would make them stop, like giving them bones to chew when we leave for a few hours? The other option, and please any suggestions would be appreciated, we are thinking of putting a gate between the kitchen+ hallway and the living room so if they go it will be on the easy to clean floor instead of the carpet until they are more house trained?
