I got home from work this evening to find my Willow cowering in the corner of her crate, surrounded and covered in liquid poop. So I put her in the tub, and bathed her first thing, and now she's curled up in her bed, moping and feeling sorry for herself. This morning when I took her for her walk she seemed fine, there's been no change in her eating or food (I switched foods about a month ago but the new food actually firmed her poops up). Her morning poop started off firm, but the last little bit was a squirt, which happens on occasion with her, so I wasn't concerned. I did notice an increase in her extra stinky farts last night, and she's been tooting a lot since I got home today.
So my question is, should I give her dinner tonight? When my other dogs had upset tummies they got only water for 24 hours, then a a few small meals of rice and boiled chicken, and reintroduced kibble slowly afterward. Also, I just took her off the chicken and rice kibble because it was giving her soft stools, and now she's eating a salmon and potato formula, so I'm not sure that rice and chicken is the best bland food to give her when she's got a sick tummy.
Is there anything else I should do for her? At what point should I call my vet?
Sorry for the gross post >_<

I would feed a small meal tonight...personally I would do rice and chicken (or pasta and chicken) but if not just a smaller amount of kibble. Every so often my dogs get this too, I figure they just got something that didn't agree with them. I don't go to the vet unless 1) they are acting sick or 2) it doesn't clear up after a few days. Otherwise I tend to wait it out for a few days and keep an eye on things.

Thanks! I might try a a little bit of kibble instead of the rice and chicken, as one or both of those things don't seem to agree with her. We went for a little walk, and she seems a little more perky now. She's doing the "I'm gonna get under your feet until you feed me" thing, and her ears go straight up at the mention of "eat", so I'm pretty sure she's hungry.

just a thought, how long since she was last treated for worms?

She was given a dewormer when I got her, and had a fecal test in January to make sure there weren't any critters in there. Could the sudden onset of the hot weather, and then my apartment building turning the AC on have anything to do with it? My apartment was 30 degrees all day yesterday, I had the window wide open to try and get some air flow, but it was really hot in here. Yesterday evening they got the AC fixed, so it's finally cool and comfortable in there. So I'm wondering if the temp could have gotten to her. She's been drinking well since I've been home, and I gave her about 1/2 cup of kibble, which she gladly ate, and then looked at me wondering where the other 1 1/2 cups were. She's a little quieter than usual, but her usual is to sleep all evening anyway, so it's hard to really tell if she's just tired from a stressful day, or if her plumbing isn't happy. Gonna keep a close eye on her tonight, and see what happens with that 1/2 cup of food. Thanks for your input everyone, worried Mumma is worried.

my daughters greyhound's story is exacly the same as yours. lives in a building, too hot etc., end storey, she brought her boy a fecal sample (once again) and sure enough, while no eggs where present today, they treated him just the same. what does that tell you? I'm telling ya, these buggars take a lot of time and medicine to rid of. just my experience... M

Just to add to the last comment, just because they test negative once for parasites does not mean that they do not have any. It's pretty common for dogs to have a "false negative" when doing fecal tests. Iv'e heard of some being tested 3 times before the test showed as positive. It might be good to test again just to be sure.

So sorry Willow wasn't feeling well! Yep, the worms test is hard. River had worms when I first brought her home, which I discovered to my disgust when she pooped and I saw little white moving things in her stool one morning. I got really lucky to have a positive test even then. Our vet said that bits of worm only slough off at certain points in the cycle, so if a test doesn't happen during that short window, it will always be negative.
Even then I think it takes a fair bit of skill to actually see what you are looking for in that test. I saw the worm, and then River did not poop again for four days for me to take a sample, so our test needed up right on the shoulder of the window.
So... I'd ask about a de-worming treatment again. River was incredibly constipated when she had worms and then she would suddenly have diarrhea, and yes, once it was in her crate.
It's funny, the vet tech also told me that River's poops would probably shrink in size once the worms were gone. She was so impressed by the amount of stool she had to sample!
Hope Willow is back to her usual self soon.

Our vet also suggests lean ground beef (browned) for an upset tummy, if you're concerned about chicken. Sent from my SGH-I747M using proboards

Hi all, thanks again for the replies. I think I will get another poop test done, just to make sure there aren't any critters in there. This morning's poop was soft, but 3-D, so I think we're getting somewhere. I gave her another 1/2 cup of food this morning, and she hoovered it. I came home this evening to a clean crate, and a very bouncy and excited dog, so I think she's feeling better. Didn't get a poop out of her this afternoon though, so it'll be another small meal tonight. Hopefully things will firm up again soon, I think she just got really overheated on Tuesday.

I tend to agree with you. I think she got over heated.
Thunder had to be treated 3 times for worms before we got him clear. Those things are persistent!

I'm happy to report that Willow's tummy is better now. I'll still pop into the vet's for another poop test, but poops are back to their normal solid state, and she's back to eating her normal amount. Though, I expect they might go softish again tonight and tomorrow because we had such a good time at the GT&A BBQ. Thanks again for all your input everyone! Happy houndie is happy, and worried Mumma is relieved

Update...again... So Willow's tummy had us up all night last night. She had the squirts again, and was pacing and panting every hour through the night to go outside. So we did, and it was gross. Then this morning she threw up. That was enough to prompt a vet visit. So now we think maybe it's the heartworm preventative that isn't agreeing with her. The first bout of diarrhea happened less than 48 hours after her first dose of Advantage Multi, and has come and gone a few times over the past 2 weeks. The vet examined her, and besides a little weight loss, she's fine. Fecal test came back clear again this week, and her temp and and vitals are all good. So now she's on some metronidazole and probiotics to get her guts back in working order. Now to decide what, if anything, to give her for parasite prevention. My vet gave me a few different options to consider, but any input on the matter is welcome!
