Some of you may remember when Tiana got badly hurt in our backyard a couple of years ago…a simple turn-out in winter that resulted in a huge skin-tear when one of the Quints' claws caught her left flank. One of those fluke things that happens when greys are out playing. The wound defied sutures and staples because of its location, and finally had to be left open to heal on its own for one or two months. Tiana had to wear Jammies the entire time so she wouldn't lick it, earning her the nick-name "Pajama Mamma", eventually shortened to "Moo Moo". Poor thing healed eventually, but was never quite the same at greyhound fun-runs. Always a devilish girl who took great delight at running at the front of the pack and t-boning her competition, after that event, Tiana was suddenly very scared and timid at runs, and wouldn't run with the pack, but would instead hide behind our legs, and was often picked on. It was heartbreaking to see. But over the past two years she has slowly been coming back, and enjoying runs again, if not being her old self completely.
This morning she was having a particularly good day at home. Our shy girl can be quite the character when she is feeling good, and today she was at her best, running after me from behind at top speed, air-snapping and jumping up on me from behind to play every time I moved. I take great delight when she is like this, because it means nothing is scaring her. Unfortunately, around 10am she made the mistake of jumping off of our bed to run after me, and landed right on top of Mr. Merlin, who was sleeping on the floor. Merlin is a very passive, loveable guy, but he will defend himself if he has to, and someone jumping on him when he is sleeping deserves defending (in his books). Dogs will be dogs. Thank goodness I don't panic when I hear the Greyhound Scream of Death…
So, off to the vet we went. Tiana now has another large wound on the same side as her previous wound, but this time down near her belly. I didn't even try to count the stitches. And, yes, she has a drain in. We just picked her up from the vet a little while ago, and she is resting comfortably upstairs (she is still sedated a bit, and is on painkillers, but managed to eat a small amount of rice and chicken). Poor baby…
let's hope this one doesn't affect her running and playing with the others...
