To-day my husband too the girls for their daily gallop in an area which is behind a huge soccer field and there was a competition going on so parking was very tight and he ended up right next a vehicle almost identical to ours.
It started to rain and he headed for the van, opened the door and realized it was the wrong car (probably because it was clean) so he got Sunny and put her in our van but couldn't find Rain. As he was wandering around looking for her a lady said, OH! She's in that car. The owner of the car had gotten in to her van rain and realized she was NOT ALONE as she heard panting. Rain was still in her car.
But what makes it especially funny is that she owns an Italian Greyhound. She must have thought for a second that someone had fertilized her dog and it grew - A LOT !!!

Maybe I'm the only one who doesn't get it -- who was holding onto Rain's leash? Obviously if he was, he'd know where Rain was -- but if you were, he'd assume you had her??

They were off-leash. You'd have to see the set-up to understand it but I assure you, they are miles away from a highway. It was a huge soccer tournament and there were cars right back to the gun club, which is where the dogs run.

Carol, I know, a little off topic, but please... Even in what you may feel is a "safe zone", you really need to keep your dogs on leash. This is the second incident, it really hurts my heart to think there may be a third.

It was a huge soccer tournament and there were cars right back to the gun club, which is where the dogs run. Okay, I just assumed they would be on-leash. Hopefully Rain knows to stay away from cars now after being hit by one. I don't think most dogs are that smart, though. My sister has a rescue dog (bully-type breed) who was found on the side of a road with injuries consistent with her having been hit by a car (including a severely broken leg). The dog's owner abandonned her (never came forward) so my sister "adopted" the dog many years ago. A few months ago, someone opened the gate to my sister's backyard and two of her three dogs ran onto the road, including this rescue dog. Being almost killed by a car years ago didn't cause her to be fearful/careful around cars. Luckily she was not injured, but my sister's other dog died.

At the gun club - which is behind the soccer field, they are long, long way from any roads.

At 45 mph, the road isn't all that far away.

They'd had their gallop and it was pouring cold rain - they just wanted to go HOME.

I wasn't going to comment on this post although I did catch the fact she must have been loose in the first post because everyone has to make there own decisions on what they feel is or isn't safe for there dog(s). I know some people wont bring there dogs to dog parks or even greyhound runs because of the inherent risk while others feel the benefits outweigh those risks. I'm aware that although in most adoption contracts (including GRA's) it states dogs must be leashed when not in a fenced in area some people still choose to allow their greyhound off leash. That a risk they're willing to take.
Having said that, Rain is a young dog fit dog. She is fairly new to your house and she has already taken off once and got hit by a car. You say you were at a gun club, what if the gun fire spooked her. In a minute flat she could be a mile away and whats more it was raining making it even harder for a car to see her and stop in time. What more do you need to be convinced to keep this dog leashed. I really am not trying to be harsh but I dread the post that she is lost or worse has been killed. I think everyone here is just concerned please do take our concerns to heart and keep your dogs leashed.
