It is with complete disbelief and incredible sadness that we are making this post. Max was diagnosed with lymphoma 12 days ago and it's been a whirlwind since then, trying to treat our boy and make him as comfortable as possible for our remaining time with him.
Yesterday, Max lost his battle with cancer. He died peacefully in J's arms waiting for the e-vet to come to the house to help him cross the bridge, we knew it was time. Our hearts are broken and the suddenness of how it all unfolded makes it all the more difficult to grasp our new reality that Max is gone.
We started our greyhound journey 8 years ago with our two angels Bonnie and Jack. Max came into our lives after Jack passed and J often called him his therapy dog as he helped him deal with Jack's passing.
Max came to us from GRA almost 4 years ago. When we went to the kennel on May 15th we knew we wanted a boy but our hearts were open to whoever chose us. We walked a few pups and then we walked Max. The deal was sealed. We had found our boy.
Here's a shot of J with him outside the kennel with papa Bill in the background:
Here he is on his way home, note Max's trademark one ear up:
Max came to GRA from Derby Lane in Florida where he ran over 160 races. Over a third of those he finished in the top 3. You wouldn't know it to look at him in his retirement though as he spent a lot of his time sleeping in his favourite position; on his back with all 4 legs in the air:
When Max first came home with us he was happy to be there but was quite aloof, he didn't need two humans constantly coddling him like Bonnie and Jack did. Max came into our house like that friend-of-a-friend at a party that nobody really knows and ends up sticking around for the long haul. He was a decent enough fellow but we didn't really know him.
In time, we got to know that friend-of-a-friend much better and that skinny little greyhound found a place at the centre of our hearts. He was a real character with a ton of personality. He used to make this sound in the middle of the night that we called his 'party-yell'. The sound was so loud and long it would wake us up and make us laugh. It sounded like a combination of an air-horn and a frat boy at a keg party. We wish we had an audio track of this, although j does a pretty good rendition of it.
He had the best ears and was a total goof-ball:
He loved his stuffies and had a very playful spirit.
It's been a difficult 2 weeks for us and many others on the forum with all of the greys that have crossed the bridge recently. Being preoccupied with caring for Max we were not up to making individual condolence posts to each family but our thoughts and sympathies have been with you. Run like the wind Sparrow, Donna, Dutch, Gable Gnaw, Lacey and all the others that have gone before you.
The house seems empty without our boy and Tarra is missing her big brother, he will always hold a special place in our hearts.
