He is a handsome boy that's for sure. Looks like he is settling in wonderfully. I don't know how you managed to wait as long as you did. Congrats and enjoy every moment with your new boy.

More pictures!!! So far he has been amazing. He is SO good with other dogs. Thankfully I have an amazing, well-socialized group for him to meet with my mother's Golden and my sister's two Aussies. He has met all 3 and he fits in so well. The first night I slept on the couch beside his crate, and he didn't make a peep. Last night I tried sleeping in my bedroom with him in the living room in the crate and he cried up a storm for pretty consistantly throughout the night. He has to sleep out in the living room, any suggestions to help him with the transition? Or do I just let him sort it out and let him "cry it out" Here is a few more from his first full day

Renegade looks so happy! As far as his sleeping in the living room I've never managed to have a grey not sleep in the bedroom with us. Each has learned the stairs at different rates and some more successfully than an other. Keep up the good work and enjoy this new journey.

Congratulations ... what a beautiful boy. Love the 2nd photo as he looks like he's having a very peaceful snooze. Enjoy this new journey of "firsts" .... as he adapts to his new environment.
Renegade is experiencing a little separation anxiety at night because he has been used to sleeping with his pack. If he is to remain in the living room, maybe try covering his crate about 3/4's with a blanket ... this will make his "den" feel more cozy and secure. Give him something of yours such as a piece of clothing that you have recently worn so there is some familiarity, you could even leave on a radio with very low volume or place a ticking clock beside his crate. Can he see or hear you from the living room? It will get better ... this is the first time in his life he has been alone and it will just take some time for him to gain some confidence. Good luck ... let us know how he's doing!!

Hi everyone! Renny is doing much better. I've started giving him Rescue Remedy and Mimulus drops before bed, and last night he was only panicky for about 40 minutes, then I didn't hear him the rest of the night! He still crys when I leave the room, leave the house, etc. but we are working on it! This has always been my least favourite part about getting a dog (only because it breaks your heart hearing them sad!!)

Aww Renny is such a cutie, thanks for posting the adorable pics! Congrats on bringing him home! Hope your week is going as well as mine (from one new mom to another, lol!). We've had such an amazing first week with Teia, enjoying so many 'firsts'...these hounds have a way of finding a special place in your heart even after a short time We had a similar issue with Teia at night and had to move her into our room so she was less stressed and we could sleep. She howled and cried consistently for the first 3 nights when we tried to keep her in the kitchen, and has been quiet as a mouse since we taught her the stairs and moved her bed to our room. She's also been more comfortable during the day since this transition - showing more confidence, willing to explore and socialize with her siblings, being more affectionate etc. Hope to hear more updates, it's nice to know there's another new parent out there!

What a happy looking puppy!
Our living arrangements and my allergies meant that River also needed to learn how to sleep in a separate room from us. It was tough at first, and if you look back in the forum a few months you will find a similar post from a sleep-deprived me asking what I might be able to do to make her more comfortable alone. I don't know if it will work for you, but what worked for River was giving her a sleeping companion. River has a giant 2.5 foot long teddy that she cuddles with and uses as a pillow when she sleeps. When she was going through nighttime SA, I would get ready for bed and put the shirt that I'd been wearing that day over the teddy so that it smelled like me. I also made sure that she was warm enough because that was another source of the crying (our house drops to 17 C over night so River has jammies and lots of blankets). Teddy was our saviour with SA.
I don't know if a big cuddle buddy like that would work for Renegade, and if you try it I would definitely supervise things at first. River is a hoarder - she doesn't play with her toys, she just collects them and hides them. So she's never chewed teddy. The only holes I've had to patch are tiny ones she created with her toenails by walking on him (he's not very thick skinned).
If Renny chews toys, you can also try creating a stuffing free cuddle buddy by stuffing a pillowcase (maybe an old one that you sleep on for a night) with scraps of fabric or old clothes.
Best of luck. If you are using a crate, covering it will probably help as will putting it in a corner. River's crate is covered with an old sleeping bag on two sides to make it feel more cozy, but also to make it a little warmer in there at night. Now she actually protests if she thinks it's time to go to bed and we are still working in our study (where her bed is). She puts her face under her blankets like an ostrich in the sand, and makes very audible sighing noises. She doesn't cry at night any more, only if it's 7:30 and she's suspicious that I've opted for the snooze button instead of the cancel button on my alarm clock.
Ear scratches to Renegade. It'll get better soon.

SIIILENT NIGHT HOLY NIGHT!!! We had the BEST night ever last night!!! I sat and watched TV with him until he fell asleep, and then left the TV on (instead of the radio, as we have been doing) and guess what! He didn't make one sad dog noise all night! I'm so incredibly proud of him. Thank you all for your support so far, he is surpassing all of my expectations every day. He is also gaining confidence on the stairs! On the way up, he now helps me out a little so i don't have to move ALL four of his legs each step down he is still very nervous. He tends to "statue" at the top and I really don't want to pull him! Luckily my boyfriend works days and I work afternoons, so we never have to rush him in the mornings. Any helpful tips for "unfreezing" my puppy? Or generally helping him figure out the "down stairs" motions?

We visited my parents yesterday and Renny got to hang out with his buddy Hunter, my mom's Golden. We let them have their first off-leash play in the field too! ( fenced ) it is so cool to see him come out of his shell and start to really "be a dog"! here he is doing what he does best with his buddy He also finally discovered what the heck you are supposed to do with bones! it's so funny to watch him discover new things
