Yesterday we got up and did our usual Sunday routine which includes going to church twice in London. We are gone about 3hrs in the morning and 3 hrs in the afternoon. So we went in the morning came home to two dogs laying quietly in their kennels no problem. Let me also add that I was warned that greys are good at getting kennels open. So in the afternoon we kennel both dogs up put the extra clip on Ty's door so he can't lift the latch on the door of his kennel. We got home from church and my hubby unlocks the door, opens it, only to be greeted by 86 lbs of lovable joy. Hubby is scared to turn on the lights to see the destruction (Ty tried to eat through my daughters door frame when he slept in her room). But to our surprise no mess no mayhem. Just a Lab still in his kennel wondering how come Ty didn't let him out. We still don't know how he got around the clip which holds the latch so it can not be pulled up (clip and latch are not bent. Anyone have any ideas about how to shut his kennel so he can't open it? And should I be worried about the outside door?

They are smart little buggers. I haven't heard of any getting out of a main door. Bill uses old collars quite effectively to keep hounds in crates. IMHO, when they start "letting themselves out", it's time to decide whether you are going to continue to crate. Once mine get to that stage (or the stage where they just don't want to go in the crate), we stop crating. All four of mine have the run of the house, save for my sewing room and the spare room. They do just fine

Our boy got out of his crate the second day we had him...so we decided not to crate him anymore. We thought, he obviously doesn't want to be in there, so we're not going to crate him. He has the run of the house all day for the past 14 months and he has been a perfect angel everyday!

My first grey got out of his crate as well. When I returned home I found the crate on its side, and Domino on the couch with his legs scraped and bleeding. That was it for the crate. I think being crate trained is such a bonus though. I have not had any problems with Dash - he's so shy that the crate gives him a wonderful sense of security.

Yup, both of mine escaped to tell me it was time to trust them to not be crated anymore. If there was no destruction, I think that's a pretty good sign Ty is ready to be left out
