I have been feeding Trip Blue Buffalo Grain Free kibble. He has been under the weather lately and after several tests with the veterinarian, we have concluded the high protein diet was causing him to have alkaline urine, leading to urinary crystal formation. I thought this was a good dog food since it is highly recommended and it is also a top seller. It certainly wasn't working for my dog.
After much research, I am considering trying my hand at cooking homemade dog food recipes. Does anyone have experience in this matter?

HI Trip, I make homemade dog food from Dogs We love. I buy the powder and meat from them and cook it myself. My dogs love it. I get the hypoallergenic formula. I think someone else on the forum posted a similar recipe, maybe do a search. I like getting her powder since it has all the nutrients added. www.dogswelove.com/orangeville/index.shtml

I had Scully on the same food (Blue Buffalo Grain Free) when he came home and had terrible trouble. The vet said he has lots of dogs come in with issues from the high protein. I switched to raw but will definitely be checking out the dogswelove website, it sounds like a good one. It's funny because my Mum used to feed all of the dogs home made food and they all lived to a ripe old age. Maybe that generation new the right way to do things after all.

Thank you for the information everyone. I recently bought a book entitled Dr. Pitcarin's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats. I am also going to do more research and check out more websites. newtothis1: I think your mum had the right idea all along.

Pitcairn is considered very outdated and carb heavy. Better to go find a raw food site that teaches you how to control the dog's intake, especially if there could even vaguely be yeast concwrns or skin issues.

Yep, Dr. Pitcairn is a good resource for a lot of things, but he also talks a lot about replacing meat with other ingredients due to environmental/moral issues. Not that I have a problem with that, but I would never feed a diet that carb heavy. I have made his food and it looks like an oatmeal type glop that none of the dogs would touch. I personally really like Lew Olsen. Her books are easy to read and follow. Her "Natural Nutrition for Dogs" has a variety of diet plans in it from kibble mix-ins to raw, cooked and combinations of the two. I have a library of dog food books and that is one of my favourites.

Another one to look into is "Complete and Balanced". This is a recipe book, though the 1st part discusses a dog's dietary needs. There are different recipes for older dogs, dogs w/ specific health concerns/diseases, and also novel protein recipes. You need to add a vitamin/mineral premix, called Hilary's Blend. If your vet doesn't carry it, they can order it...but I think it is also avail. on line from Hilary's website. Good luck!

After having run into a funk with our girl's diet, I'm very interested in Dogs We Love as well. The book from Lew Olsen also sounds promising. Will check them both out.

I can't remember where you live, but I believe "Dogs We Love" has a store in Collingwood now too. Also...I go to O-ville all the time, so if you ever want 25 min. (one way) cut off the drive, I can bring some to Shelburne if you are coming from the north. Probably just as easy to make your own too though...

We live in the GTA, so I'm not really sure which location is closer (I couldn't find my way out of a paper bag to be honest, lol) but if we do decide to try it out, we'll most likely take a leisurely drive there one weekend. Thanks again!

She devoured it, and there were no digestive upsets afterwards! Thank you troysmom for suggesting it!

Glad she liked it! My boys always devour theirs as well. I add their daily fish oil to it as well.
I usually make a trip and buy a couple boxs and enough of the meat to last me for a while.
