I just ordered some elevated dog bowls online. I had to order from Amazon since none of the pet stores around here have elevated bowls which are high enough. I was just wondering if anyone else used these and if it helps which the greyhound gas problem.

My four all have elevated feeding stations and I love them. I find when the hounds can drink and eat at a decent level, there seems to be less mess of flying food and water on the floor. But a pail turned upside down or a step stool, etc. could also serve as an elevated feeding station. As for the gas, having their food elevated may help but I find that adding a probiotic/enzymes to their meals once daily really puts an end to that horrible gas situation.

It's funny you mentioned the probiotic thing. I just started doing that a few days ago. Where do you get your supplements from and what do you use?

PetSmart sells several elevated feeding stations that are high enough -- weird that you couldn't find any? Anyway, we use elevated bowls here, too -- not to prevent gas (no one ever seems to discuss gas in relation to elevated bowls but people do discuss bloat) but just to be more comfortable when eating or drinking. So that she doesn't look like a giraffe at the watering hole, with her front legs all splayed so she can reach down. LOL! I'm glad that Summer doesn't generally have gas, although there were one or two kibbles that we tried in the past which seems to be an issue that way. I'm guessing the gas may be caused or exacerbated by what you are feeding?

It's hard to tell. Some days the gas is worse than others even though I feed him the same thing consistently.

I've been getting my probiotics from Bio-Ag Consultants in the Wellesley area (near Kitchener). Many pet food stores, veterinarians and on-line stores will also carry probiotics but with four hounds to feed it made more sense to buy the probiotics in bulk. What are you using for a probiotic and is it helping??

Omega Alpha from Greenhawk. It does seem to be helping.

Re: elevated food bowls...I use wrought iron plant stands that I bought @ Home Depot for Wyn's food/h20. I like angelollie's ideas too...nothing like repurposing something that is unused I had been using yogurt w/ her supper for previous gas issues, but as she recovers from a bout of colitis, I have her on fortiflora from my vet. I'm w/ Summer's mum in thinking that maybe there is an ingredient in Trip's food that isn't quite agreeing w/ him...I'm glad for your nose that the Omega Alpha is helping though!

We found our feeding station at Pet Valu but used a step stool in the interim, as someone else mentioned. Bonnie used to have killer gas but that dissipated after a lot of trial and error and now she only pollutes a room occasionally. We feed her raw that I mix with 1/4 can of tripe along with a cup of brown rice or quinoa. Tripe has many great nutritional benefits and it also helps alleviate tummy trouble. I used to use the probiotic powder you can get at pet stores, but I found it more economical to use plain probiotic yogurt. Once I found the right diet for her, Bonnie rarely has pudding poops unless my dh (who shall remain nameless) sneaks her some people food.

We recently came across information that stated raised food bowls cause rotated stomachs - a problem common in large, deep chested dogs. In case this was only one person's opinion, we did further research and came across the same info in a variety of sources and we are now feeding our gals from floor level.
However, if you want to continue feeding from a raised station, we used small pails that de-icer came in. When they're right side up the metal bowls fit right inn.
