Quite a scare yesterday evening. Just 5 minutes into a walk along the Oak Ridges trail with Light and Joker on leash enjoying sniffing the tall grasses on the shoulders of the gravel path, Light slowed with head low and pointed forward. I turned to head back to the car (she didn't look 'right'), at which point she vomited, took a few staggered steps and then literally fell over on her side. Her mouth was slightly open, eyes stared, non-responsive. In probably 10 sec. (seemed forever), with me screaming her name, she 'came to', weakly stood up and made it back to the car. All worse-case scenerios spun in my head. Then noticed a large swelling around right eye, left side of snout, and right lower lip.
To make a long story short... she improved rapidly and by the time emergency vet saw her,she seemed back to norm, vital signs norm, and swelling reduced. Vet said classic anaphylactic response but was extremely surprised she recovered without intervention.
I must note that I keep Benedryl in emergency kit but did not have it with me. Even so I would probably not have made the connection till I saw the swelling. (Apparently dogs do not have the tracheal constriction as do humans).
There was no signs of what the allergen may have been (nothing ingested, no evidence of bite or sting, etc.).
In my readings, I have not seen any reference to some type of predisposition or such?? Has anyone experienced anything like this?
Never ever want to be that scared again! Light seems perfectly fine today...like nothing happened. Joker and I have a few more gray hairs!

Omd! That sounds awful! So glad things resolved themselves, I can't imagine how scared you must have been. Extra love and scritches to Light and Joker from Slappy and us.

Wow that is scary....I thought for sure you were going to end the story with that fact that it was a wasp it or something, but you did not. I have heard of allergy specialists for animals, your vet could probably recommend one. Other than that I am just so glad she is o.k and back to normal today. Give her an extra hug from us.

Wow. Glad Light is doing fine now. These situations are so scary and makes us really appreciate our pups (as if we don't already). Give Light some extra hugs from us.

Ugh, what a terrible fright! I thought you were going to say that she ate a wasp or something similar. Too bad that you weren't able to find out what caused your sweetie's reaction though. I noticed with my own girlie that she loves to snap up any flying insect that might be stupid enough to cross her path so I asked for advice on another forum about the dosage for giving Benadryl. B/c it's bug season, I carry a fanny pack that's stocked with Benadryl liquid caps, just in case this happens to Bonnie. Thank goodness your Light got through it and she's now okay! Thanks for posting your experience; you may have just saved another dog's life b/c you did!

I can't imagine what was going through your mind when Light went down ... talk about a panicky situation not knowing what was happening to her. So happy to hear that your sweet girl is doing just fine and back to normal. Now that's a happy ending. I too send hugs to Light.

Since I did refer to Benadryl in the thread above, I thought I should note that in an emergency, one should only use the 'plain' formula. That is 'diphenhydramine' being the only medicinal ingredient. NEVER use the combined formulas containing acetaminophen or any other ingredient. Can be fatal! (General rule-of-thumb for dogs is 1mg /1lb body weight, but please check with you vet about this).
.....Hope you never need it.

Wow! That is scary. I am so glad that everyone is all right.
Rhapsody, the black lab that we had when I was in high school, was the first dog I'd ever met with allergies. The first time she went in to get her shots with us as a puppy, her face swelled to the point where she could not even open her eyes. After that she had to get a shot of Benadryl before every set of shots, and we had to watch for a severe reaction for 48 hours afterwards. Although we were never 100% positive, we suspect that she was allergic to eggs. Egg whites are often used as the containing substance for the serums in injections. Rhapsody was also allergic to chicken (not surprising given the egg thing) and to plastic. If she ate or drank out of a plastic bowl or found something plastic to chew on even for a few seconds (like a frisbee), her face would swell.
So much to our surprise, we learned that dogs can be allergic to many of the things that people can be allergic to, and then some extra things (like plastic). We made sure that the benadryl we bought was plain jane original benadryl (never the Non-Drowsy kind).
I hope you can find out what caused Light's reaction! Lots of belly rubs for all.

Wow that is scary. Glad things got better quickly. I often wonder what I would do if one of my dogs went down. I know that I could never carry them back to the car. You are so lucky she got back up and could get to the car.
