Greeting everyone! My name is Cindy and we just adopted Kingfisher, our first ever greyhound!!! I'm very excited and nervous at the same time. I have a cat.......so I'm educating myself as much as possible before I bring him home . That date is next Tuesday July 23rd, I'm on vacation for the week so I can be at home for the beginning of the transition. I live in London, and if anyone has any tips, information they want to share that would be appreciated. I'm sure I will have tons of questions. Thanks!

Congratulations! You're going to love every minute of it! All I know is that you learn something new about them everyday =) We also have cats, just make sure you have the muzzle and leash on for their first intro. I was also told to take your boy on a long walk before introducing to your cat for the first time, so they're less excitable.. I can't wait to see photos! =D

Congratulations! How exciting for you. Denyserizzo has provided good advice. Take it slow in the introduction. Possibly move the coach away from the wall if need be so the cats have places to hide and get use to their new roommate. They need some time to establish the pack.

Congrats and welcome to the forum! Kingfisher is a great pup!
We have a cat as well. I also agree with Denyserizzo's advice. Take things s-l-o-w-l-y. Sally was quite unsure of Tony (our cat) at first. I just did short, supervised introductions daily, gradually increading the length of time they were together. I also praised Sally for good behavior with Tony.
Can't wait to see pics!!

Congratulations on adopting Kingfisher and welcome to the forum. Don't worry about your questions .... that's one way the forum can help you. I don't have kitties but the info you have received so far is great. The muzzle will be your best friend for awhile and don't worry.. Kingfisher is used to wearing one. Good luck with the intro to the kitty.
At the beginning of the forum, under Greyt Information, New to Greyhounds, you'll find some great greyhound information. Greyhound Information-Greyhound Articles is excellent and just about covers everything "greyhound".. There probably is an article about how to introduce hound and kitty. The second article is called "No Fear No Pain". This is excellent information ... it helps you understand so much about the greyhound and what to expect once they enter their Forever Home. I wish this article had been available when I got my first greyhound back in the 90's.

Wonderful news! So happy for you and hope the days between now and the 23rd go by quickly !
Very good advice above. Caution in the beginning sets the stage for some wonderful friendships to follow. (We have two greyhounds and one cat and they get along very well).

Congratulations! This is so exciting!
I spent about an hour walking Kingfisher at the picnic and I thought he was a wonderful dog. I am so glad he found a home. One thing I learned very quickly about Fisher is that he loves water. When he saw the pond he started shaking with excitement, and before I knew it, we were both going for a swim! At the time, I thought Kingfisher was aptly named.
He's a beautiful, gentle dog with a big heart and a big personality to fit his rather big body! I am very very happy that he's found a great family to take him home. Please keep us updated on Fischer's future adventures with you! :-)

Congrats on your new boy. You will have a blast with him. We have two cats as well and I cannot add anything that everyone else has not said, just go slow. Keep us posted on how it goes and don't forget the pictures when you get him home.

Welcome to the forum Cindy! I bet Tuesday seems like an eternity away for you! I cannot wait to see your first few posts & pictures of Fisher settling in. I have two cats and they have lived with two different greyhounds without any issue. As others have said muzzling is a must at first and always supervise. I also suggest that you make it very clear of the hierarchy (you, the cat, then the dog) as dogs are very respectful to the laws of the pack. In my case I always fed the cats first while my greyhound sat on her bed watching and then once they were finished the greyhound would get fed. Make sure feeding stations are far apart too. Don't force your cat, let the cat decide when the introduction will take place. Immediately correct any unwanted behaviour and watch the body language of both animals. Be calm & patient and you should have no problems.
Hope you get some sleep before now & Tuesday!!

Welcome and congrats! I remember the feeling of excitement but nervousness waiting for my first grey to come home. It s wonderful you have vacation time to settle in. It'll be tempting to spend all your time with him but remember to do some alone time training! Good luck on Tuesday. It'll go really well I'm sure of it. Keep us posted!

Here's a link to Karen's kitty article, in case you haven't seen it. gracanada.proboards.com/thread/7969/cat-training-greyhoundAnother suggestion: If you are using a kennel/basket muzzle and the nose isn't padded, buy some moleskin which is sticky on one side (you can get at the drugstore) and pad the bridge of the nose for extra comfort. (Camp Greyhound sells much lighter muzzles than the plastic basket muzzle).
