Yup, our new sister is a broodie!
We're not supposed to have a new sister. Ever since Edie arrived in Dec 05 (1 1/2 years ago), Mom has been insisting that she would not be adding to the group. Here is her attempt to explain:
Mom's Story:
Yes, we were at capacity. On June 16, I took Betsy and Edie to the GRA Canada Reunion Picnic (pics gracanada.proboards101.com/index.cgi?board=event&action=display&thread=1182048743). Shortly after I arrived, Bill asked if I'd met Easy. I replied that I thought I was to stay out of the kennel. He said that I was to go and say hello to her. He added that he had told Jen (Jiffer)--who (with TinasTroops) was handling adoptions that day--that if I didn't arrive, she was to put Easy on a leash and find me.
Because of Bill's enthusiasm for the match, I agreed to say hello. I accepted the leash from Jiffer, and we went for a walk. After less than 5 minutes, Edie was pacing Easy (walking right beside her), which is what she does when she really likes another dog. Betsy was happy to go along. Easy seemed to be good with people and other dogs, including small versions of each. I even got a couple of pics (see the picnic thread). But Easy didn't really respond to me at all. Eventually I had to leave, so I gave Easy back to Jiffer. I told Bill that we hadn't connected, but admitted that she was probably just distracted by all the action at the picnic.
For the balance of the day, I kept thinking about whether I should go back. I didn't need another dog, but given that Bill thought she was perfect, and that she probably had found the picnic pretty exciting, I thought a second chance was in order. So I finally called and made an appointment.
The next day I took Perry and Minnie. Minnie is top dog, and I don't wish to upset her by bringing in an even stronger dog. There weren't any conflicts between Easy and the woolly dogs. More important, Easy really connected with me: hollering at me when I went into the barn (Jiffer had said that she was usually quiet), accepting attention when offered, even playing with me a bit. I agreed to adopt her. Then when she was supposed to be heading back into the barn, she tried to leave with us. I gave her back to Bill, who got her through the front storage section to the kennel door, and she turned and shot back out to be with us. Had the deal needed cement, that would have been it.
And really, what better place than here for an 8-year-old, grey-faced, fuzzy-butted, brindle female?
On Tuesday she had her surgery (spay, dental, removal of breast mass (not cancer) and two nipples) and other vet attention.
I picked her up on Sunday. As I was leaving, Bill asked Easy whether she thought her Mom could be convinced to adopt another little girl. I barked "NO!" so quickly and vehemently that Bill laughed. Then I ruined it by telling him that if a particular girl who had been at GRA with Betsy was ever returned....
She can't be called Easy--it's too close to Edie (yet another reason to regret that I didn't name Edie "Dora" (the Explorer)), so Easy is now Piper.
It's been a bit unsettling for her since she got home--I've been in and out, she spent part of yesterday at the vet clinic for a checkup and bath, and so on. However, she's getting along well with me and the girls, and I think she can be taught not to eat the cats, so it's time to introduce her.

Here's Piper, a sweet gentle respectful curious broodie:
Riding home in the car (after she settled a bit):
Walking with Minnie:
and Perry:
and Betsy:
In the yard with Edie (that's Perry to the left):
and Betsy:
Checking out a tennis ball. She's curious about toys, but hasn't picked up anything yet:
Looking through the front window, "Holy smokes! What's that?"
Yes, like Edie, she's an HB's Commander granddaughter with donkey ears:
Noticing Harriet the Spy on the stairs:
"Excuse me, I have a plane to catch."
Sharing her dinner with Harriet. Piper has not been eating, and I was trying to hand feed her. As a former stray, Harriet is always starving. Piper doesn't actually know that Harriet is present--when she did notice, she started to whine. As for the bowl: it's a gift/spare; I'll get her a proper one this week:
Trying out the living room beds, with Betsy on the right. She seemed a bit hesitant to lie on the "other dogs' beds", but she's getting over it:
Wearing the "good dog" bandana she got after her bath at the vet clinic:
Sharing "her" comforter with Edie (front) who got there first this morning:
In my home office with Edie (left, roaching) and Minnie. She later moved from the floor to the beds:
Welcome home Piper! I hope you have a wonderful time here at the retirement villa.
At next year's picnic, I will stay out of the barn, and I will not accept any leashes. <snort>
And to those who might think that I need another woolly dog to restore the balance: BITE YOUR TONGUE!!
