Hi everyone! I posted over the summer about hoping to adopt a grey sometime soon. Well..."soon" is still coming . It's looking like January will hopefully be the month for us. In the meantime, I'd like to get a head start on reading some training books. Does anyone have any recommendations of books that they've found particularly useful? I already have "Adopting the Racing Greyhound", so I'm looking for some additions to that...maybe more general methods of training.

Greyhounds for Dummies is a really good one as well.. Hopefully everything will come together in January for your new addition.

I read both of the above books, and while it was moderately helpful. Turbo was really nothing like what the books said. He had no problem with stairs, windows, peeing inside, etc. to the point where we wonder if he could have been in a home before us somehow. At the end of the day he's still just a dog, so any dog training book would be helpful. The Dummies book in particular has more of an emphasis on training.

I started with my local library catalogue and ordered any and all books in connection with greyhounds. Some of the books I skimmed, others I read in great detail. I basically prepared myself for every kind of problem imaginable; none of which I ever encountered anyway.
The library would be a great place to start. I ordered all the books online from home and they were all delivered to the branch nearest to me.

Christine if you look under "Home", there is a Training and Behaviour section. Maybe it will lists helpfull tips and books to read. Love to find out who you adopt.

I found 'Adopting the Racing Greyhound' better then any other books. The best advice I got was from meeting up with greyhound owners nearby ( lucky us, we have three people with greys, all from GRA on our block!!), and our vet. Our vet owns a whippet and has great experience with hounds. She knows best and is available at a moments notice, which was very handy the first two weeks. If you haven't found a vet familiar with greys, find one now. We also make an effort to meet up with other greys, and it's incredible how Froggy interacts with the seniors. They are teaching her manners

Oh yes,Seniors do teach the young ones manner. Rain was only 3 1/2 when we adopted her and came in to a home with a senior broodie. Sunny was not shy in telling Rain off when she misbehaved.
