Question: When we were looking into getting a grey we read that they shed little, however, both of mine seem to shed more than I thought they would. We feed them raw and ensure they eat fish 1 - 2 times a week, does anyone else think their grey sheds too much? Thanks

I used to own a malamute who "blew" her coat twice a year, so I think I can handle any amount of shedding! lol Teague doesn't normally shed too much, but both him and Karma my other dog are shedding right now. I am assuming it is just losing the winter coat, and have Furminated them both so it seems to be slowing down. Do your pups shed all the time or just at certain times of the year?
Also: when I first picked Teague up from the kennel his fur was not in the best of shape from the track. He had tufts and fluff sticking up all over his back and dandruff everywhere. It took a good month of a lot of brushing and good food before it went away.
If your grey's fur is nice and their skin is fine, I wouldn't be overly concerned, it is more if they have brittle fur or dry skin/dandruff that I would worry.

Thanks! Both coats are good, soft, etc WE have only had them since DEc and they went through getting rid of their race coat, now I guess it is their winter coats. I will just monitor it and see how it goes.

Mine don't shed all that much. They shed twice a year, spring and fall but hardly at all througout the rest of the year. I had a collie x growing up, now he could shed.

My last dog was a white american shepherd cross. She shed a small dog every day. When I took her for her grooming during her undercoat sheds, they'd fill a large garbage can with hair. Yes, Mr Max sheds. Everyone comments on how much he sheds for having so little hair. But, he's healthy and has a nice, soft coat. I'm not concerned and when people say he sheds a lot, I just smile and think of my little white girl. When I brush Max I get as much in a full brushing as I did with one swipe of the brush with my shepherd!

When they say greyhounds don't shed much, they're comparing greyhounds to other dogs which, as others have mentioned, often shed tons. They do still shed though.
Do you brush your dogs? A brush that works well on Leo is the Kong Grooma, I think it's called. I got it at PetSmart but I'm sure it's sold elsewhere. I brush Leo outside with that, that gets some loose hair out, then I go over him with a stiff, thick bristle dog brush to flick the loose hair/dandruff off. I also have a rubber grooming mit with lots of tiny "nubs" that works well. I spend about 20 minutes every week or so (depending how much Leo is shedding at the time -- sometimes more than once a week). Again, greyhounds don't require nearly the amount of grooming that some other dogs do, but do require some.

Araley sheds and sheds and sheds and sheds. She's fairly unusual for a grey, in my experience - she's got a fairly thick coat and she does shed quite a bit. Still, she doesn't even shed as much as the cat - she just does it in a different way. For her, she's always shedding a bit at a time, but gets much worse in spring and fall. I have to brush her every other day during those seasons and it always looks like I shaved her in the yard once I'm done!

The "furminator" is a pretty cool tool, if you have a shedder.

Guinness used to blow his coat, he'd get a dullish brown/black and I could pull it out in chunks. Jack hardly shed at all. Jasper did a bit in the spring.

Jack didn't shed at all when we first got him, then I gave him a bath and he has been shedding like crazy since. I am hoping it is a summer thing we have the winter off from his crazy shedding.

When I first got Azi, she didn't shed AT ALL. I am actually allergic to a lot of animals, so having a low-shedding dog was paramount.
Now that spring is here, however, she is shedding so much. I brush her daily with a rubber hound glove and she get fish oils in her food. I think she's just shedding some winter coat, but we'll see! I haven't yet given her a bath since she came home to me (about two months ago), so maybe that will help?

Thanks everyone, I guess Peanut is a shedder, her coat is thick, healthy etc, so I could just be lucky - Emma sheds but her coat is much thinner - both are healthy so I will just carry on.
