With this afternoon being so nice I went out to the back to just relax with the baby and the dogs. Thankfully Her royal Highness Corinna decided she much rather stay on her queen size bed in the cool house then lay on the dirty ground so it was just Wally that went out.
When I opened the gate I saw a small squirrel (probably born this year but not a baby anymore) about a meter or two from a group of trees. Wally took off running, not after the squirrel just to run in the yard and the squirrel instead of going up the trees decided it would take off across the lawn to the fence line. The two nearly collided and what did Wally do, why he did a flying leap over the squirrel so as not to hit it. I was pretty shocked he didn't try to eat it but Wally was unfazed and continued to do his usual running laps then played with his ball for a while.
A few minutes later I see the squirrel back in the yard, but by this point Wally was just grazing on grass, he sort of looked at it then whet right back to eating grass. So the squirrel crosses the entire yard again to where it was initially and starts foraging/digging something under some brushes. Wally eventually came and lay by my feet in the shade, and the squirrel continued to stay in the yard getting closer and closer to us and at one point was probably only 15 ft away from Wally and me. It either knew Wally was no threat to it or it was the stupidest squirrel around, but either way it better not do that when Corinna is around because she would sure not hesitate to make a meal out of him if she gets half a chance.
I didn't have a camera with me and the baby was snoozing in my arms so I couldn't run in to get one, but I really wish I did.

Oh, Wally! I would love to have seen him jump over the squirrel! ;D That would have made the most amazing video!

Oh Wally you are one sweet boy. Perhaps you can warn the little fella that your sister Corinna might not be so polite should he plan to visit again.
p.s. Max concurs with Betsy and Edie, "what were you thinking Wally?" "I simply go crazy for squirrels and nearly rip my off my mom and dad's arm whenever I'm out for a walk and see them darting around in the park. Actually I did that just this morning so they immediately headed to the enclosed baseball diamond so I could run off some of my energy. Go me!"

He was back today!! This is the best I could get with my cell phone. Wally Says : To all my fellow greyhound friends, can't we all just live and let live. Well except if you're a fly or bee then you must die!!

he looks lonely and I think he's giving calming signals! If you play your cards right, Caroline, you could have him as a house pet in three, maybe four days...isn't every child's first pet some sort of rodent?

And Corinna would eat him 3 or 4 seconds later, lol. Plus Sophia has two dogs and three cats as pets already, a rodent is the last thing she needs.
In all seriousness I think he may be being feed by somebody else around here. He is very friendly/trusting for a wild squirrel. He looks very young to me, maybe half the size of the others that I see. I had to chase him away when I brought Corinna out and then I was petrified he would return and get killed by her. I really don't want him to get hurt, I think he's pretty cute.

Wally you are too funny. Guess he'd rather go after inanimate objects (ball) - his chasing days are over! ;D I hope Mr. Squirrel doesn't appear when Corinna is out.
Chicky says to Wally - "if it ain't a cat then it's fair game brother"!

Get down real low Wally, and then sprint after the little guy. But when you catch him under your paw, just stare at him and then he runs away so you can play another day! It's loads of fun!!--Velvet-

That is too funny That is pretty amazing, I don't think any of my pups would do that. We walk in a "groundhog" field most nights...there are literally groundhogs everywhere darting in and out of their holes. Karma is obsessed with this field but the other day she actually got between a groundhog and his hole. She just stopped dead in her tracks and let it jump right over her. Teague, I doubt would have done that, but sometimes when the prey is coming at them rather then running away they have a change in heart and accept them as a buddy. lol

Somehow I think Rain would do the same. The first day she came home she walked right past our black cat and ignored him completely. She has since invited him to play with her but he says he's too old. The other 3 cats aren't afraid of her either. The greys must give off certain vibes that tells other critters whether or not they are life threatening.

Mayhem and Chaos would have been on that squirrel before it knew what happened. The boys take patrolling THEIR yard very seriously you know!

My dog hates squirrels with a passion. He's chased them onto an old neighbour's garage before. The squirrel had to come up with a Plan B in a real hurry because they hadn't expected to be followed onto the garage.
As far as Wally not chasing the squirrel, he's just taking retirement seriously.
