I recently lost my Grey to Lymphoma. I have read that 1 out of 4 dogs are succumbing to cancer and the cause could be the food they are eating. Whether this is true or not I am open to making home made or feeding raw next time. However, have no idea what the nutritional requirements are of a dog. Could anyone recommend any books that would cover this off. Thanks.

There are tons of resources on raw food and also more than one way to feed it...so its hard to cover it all in a post, but if you do some reading you can hopefully find something that works for you. There isn't really a "secret recipe" it is basically broken down into percentages, and depending on the opinion, those can change a bit. A few books that I personally like are: Carina Beth McDonald: Raw Dog Food: Make it Easy for You and Your Dog (this book pretty much covers all of the info in the other books, and it is very entertaining to read as well and one of the only books with pictures, and internet sites, forums, etc.) Also, a lot of people like the Dr. Tom Lonsdale books (Raw Meaty Bones). I have quite a library here at home but those are the two most useful IMO. I personally find the easiest way to do raw is to do a raw meaty bone meal and a ground meal with some of the boneless meat, organs, veggies plus some extras ( I make this and freeze it). Others just feed meat/bones/organs, some people feed ground mixes, some people just supplement kibble with it, etc. If you'd like any of the specifics I'd be happy to help you out, and there are a lot of others on the board as well. I've been feeding it for about 12 years now with 4 dogs and they have all done excellent on it

A good way to start learning is to join the groups: Raw Feeding and Raw ChatAnd start reading now. They are nazis but they sure know how to feed the modified prey model, and after almost 20 years of feeding raw, this is what's had the best results with my pack. Feeding a species appropriate diet is pretty much the foundation for good health, but it's only a start. It's just as important to stop insulting the immune system with all the pesticides we are all continually told we need to give to our dogs. Also take a long hard look at the vaccination issue. I mention these issues not to stir the pot (they seem to be quite controversial on this particular board), but to give a more comprehensive set of guidelines for rearing your greyhound naturally.
