Not really a funny story but rather cute I thought. The walking in the neighbourhood has been tricky to say the least so far this winter. Between the mounds of snow, then the ice sidewalks sometimes I wish I had cleats on my boots. This morning was quite icy. Anyways, I have noticed that whenever I have a real slip (like you almost fall on your butt, but manage to save yourself) Chicky always touches her nose to my hand as soon as I have steadied myself. This always brings a smile to my face. Unfortunately one day my mom (who comes around noon each work day to take Chicky out for a short walk) did fall to her knees when London had the piles of snow - my mom said that Chicky got right up close to the side of my mom & my mom put one hand on the snow bank and one hand on Chicky's back to push herself back upright.

What a good girl she is.
I've heard about greyhounds being used as service dogs to help people who are unbalanced steady themselves. I guess the height is a great asset.

My mom bought YakTraks for us. I never use mine, but it's been so icey lately that I should see if I can find them. They have this rubber frame that you pop on over your shoes or boot and then these metal rings over the sole to help you grip.

Dexter is my balance dog when we're walking on slick and icy slopes. He's generally pretty good about staying right beside me so if I start to slip, I can get a hand down on his back. One time I did slip and he was positioned perfectly so that my arm went across his back and I didn't actually land, just kind of ended up with my butt hovering over the ground.

Leo does the same for me. I have days where I have no blance and need walls to help me walk. On these days Leo is very good about staying close to me in case I need extra help. He will also stay near me if I bend down to do something, he is my support to get back up, he's the perfect height.

What a sweet and helpful girl you are, Chicky!
I've stopped myself from falling twice using Leo's tall back/bum to put my hand out to catch myself while on a slippery hill. The first time he was a little nervous, the last time he was a very good boy and stood still for me although he did wonder what I was doing to him!

My friend just gave me a set of YakTraks that she found in her garage - not sure if I can convince my mom to use them but I'm sure going to give them a try! Now I need something for "inside protection too". I fell down my carpeted stairs to the basement earlier this week (about 2/3 of the way down) - can't even tell you what exactly happened. Fortunately I didn't injure anything (other than my pride) - the weight I've gained this year all seems to have gone to my behind which meant I had some good cushioning as I bounced down the stairs! ;D (Chicky & the cats all came running to the top of the stairs to see what happened to me - no one came to help me get up though )
