Me again,
So in my research on a raw diet, I am finding lots of opinions and views on feeding pork. Some say to freeze any pork bones for at least 3 weeks to avoid Aujeszky’s Disease or pseudorabies. Some say that it is not a problem now. What does everyone do? do you freeze first or do you feed pork like chicken, beef, lamb, etc?

Our girls had pork riblets as their Xmas treat, right off the grocers shelf - I hope they don't develop either of these diseases - Ha! Ha! I think, in this day and age, pork production is highly regulated and diseases one could get from pork in the past, such as trichinosis, is no longer an issue. What is Aujesky's disease???

I fed Jasper a pork hock without freezing it first. Now I freeze them first. I haven't read about a minimum freezing period. Jasper LOVES pork - had a hock for Christmas dinner. LOL He loves the riblets as well.

WOW! That is scary. I'd never heard of this before. However, it has been 4 days since the girls had their riblets and they're fine, just snoozing away after breakfast in typical greyhound fashion.

I think if you are getting your pork from reputable sources you don't need to worry. I have never made it a point to freeze pork - neither for myself or for the dogs. (Well it does get frozen for storage but I definitely feed them pork on the day it arrives as well). Of course all of the meat that the dogs eat here is suitable for human consumption (except the green tripe). I would think this is more of a concern if you're getting meat off the side of the road

I was curious so I looked it up -- and I wouldn't worry about this at all. The disease has NEVER been reported in Canada, and hasn't been seen in the U.S. (besides in wild pigs) since 2004: Pseudorabies has been reported in most countries, with the exception of Canada, Greenland, Australia and any African country.
The U.S. has been actively working towards eradication of the disease since 1989, and by 2004, domestic swine in all states were considered free of the virus. However, the pseudorabies virus is known to be present in feral swine and these animals pose an on-going risk to the domestic population.www.inspection.gc.ca/english/anima/disemala/aujesz/aujeszkyfse.shtml
