For some reason I've gotten away from giving Roman his dental bones....no specific reason, it just seems that people (aka. his "grandma and grandpa ) keep buying him other dog treats so that's mostly what he's been getting lately. But he had a dental in May and his teeth are already giving him stinkkkkkyyyy breath!! Does anyone have any suggestions of bones or chews that they give their dog that really help with the tartar? I know I'm a bad mommy, but I don't like to give him marrow bones because....well, it just grosses me out when he's knawing on it . Sorry - I know I'll be shamed for it!! But is there anything else that works well? Forget the tartar liquid and stuff like that - it's useless on Roman's pearlies! Chews and hard bones seem to work best it seems.... P.S. I brush his teeth at least a few times per week but it doesn't help so much.... Thanks

LOL! Trust me...I know all too well about being totally grossed out about the marrow bones. I'm a vegetarian and I give them..ugh! The smell and the look just about make me hurl but yet I do it! There's something you can buy from the vet that's a dental chew but they run pretty expensive. Chicken backs are also good (I'm sure that'll gross you out though! ha!). Stay away from Greenies whatever you do! I'd also stay away from rawhide because it can get caught in their throat, stomach, etc. Nyla-bones are good, however, with really aggressive chewers there's a risk of them wearing down their front chompers. It happened to one of my dobie girls but for normal chewers they're fine. There are the prickly nyla-bones too. There's also something like a rope toy that's semi-dental floss-like. It's supposed to be good as well. There's always info. on greytalk about this as well!

Edie seems to be OK with them--I've only given her one--but Betsy was swallowing chunks that were frighteningly large, so I stopped giving them to her. (Aside: The feline CET chews work well for cats.)

I have a terrible problem with our Brin. She doesn't chew...anything! She gobbles her food maybe actually crunching a few kibbles in the process and she breaks up a cookie but then hoovers it back I tried raw hide (North American specified only) and once it got a bit soft, gulp! Down it went. No more raw hides in this household now. She has terrible teeth. We've had to have several extractions done because she's just one of those dogs with excessive bacteria in her mouth (according to our vet) and she will not, I mean will absolutely not, allow brushing! I've tried every trick in the book and she just won't stand (or lay) for it. My vet recommended a supplement to their water called BreathaLyser. It seems to be at least slowing down the plaque build-up on her teeth and Katzar's are looking greyt (although he does like to crunch and munch things).

Watch out with pigs anything.. they are usually quite high in salt, which isn't good for them. I've also heard of pigs ears containing salmonella.
I give my guys rolled rawhide bones to chew. I also brush with Petrodex. Icarus and Atlas' teeth are in greyt condition. Echo and Orion's teeth have improved considerably.
Once I get my fenced yard, I'll be giving them marrow bones and the good chews like that, but right now, my tan carpet would not be too pleased.

I give my guys rolled rawhide bones to chew. I heard that you should only give North American made raw hides because if they come from other countries they are usually cured in fromaldahyde. Do you know if this is true?

For indoor chewing, I use vinyl backed mattress protectors. Zellers, for example, has some that are about the size of the floor of a large crate. I just toss them in the wash after the girls are finished. This only works because Betsy (on a dog bed) and Edie (in a crate) stay put while they chew.

But when Echo threw up one she had eaten which had sat in her stomach for a week, I decided that I didn't want to risk the blockage. From my experience, and contrary to Greenies claim, I don't think they are digestible.

I read a report on the internet that there were a lot of problems with dogs choking on the greenies as well... We've never used them. I found that the breath buster treats (by the same people who make dentabone) helped Tigger's horrrible breath. Tigger loves his Dentabones... The Dentatwists are good too..

I tried the Nutro brand of plaque treats and was quite surprised at the diffence it made in Tease's teeth. She won't eat hard kibble so she needs something to chew on....
