Hi everyone This is my first post and probably my last for a while. We brought Vegas, a five year old red brindle male wonder-dog, into our family on May 27th. He was just starting to get playful and adjusted with our three boys, ages 9, 7 and 3 when according to the vet's best guess (we didn't have an autopsy done), his stomach became twisted and he was gone within a very short time. After a run he was really tired and became unresponsive. I thought he may have overdone it in this heat and tried to cool him down with wet towels. A vet tech told me I should blow in his nose a few times to give him more oxygen. He started having seizures and yelping, bit my hands a couple of times, and his tongue started to turn purple. His heart raced and then beat really slow then raced again and stopped. In desperation I tried rescue breathing and chest compressions. In the end it didn't help. By the time we loaded him in the van and got him to the emergency vet just around the corner it was too late. It all happened within an hour. It was the boys first experience with a dog that they picked out themselves and now we don't know what to do. We may just lay low for a while. We may visit the kennel if Bill says it is okay. We will go on summer holidays and regroup in the fall, I think. the buchanan family

I am so very very sorry to hear about Vegas. It must have been horrible for you all.
I have experience, as do others here, with the sudden death of a beloved greyhound. It's truly a very traumatic thing to go through, please be gentle with yourselves while you are coming to terms with what happened.
Gastric torsion and bloat does happen in deep-chested breeds, but is not considered common at all.
Sending prayers for peace to you all.

I am so sorry for your loss. Although Vegas was with you only a short while he will have made a good lasting impression (although blurred right now by grief) on your boys and you. Please except my sincere sympathy and prayers. Tara

I'm so sorry! It's very hard to lose a beloved companion no matter how long you have them. Big Hugs!
Take good care of yourselves and know that these things happen. Bloat is a very odd illness that has baffled vets for a long time. They can only speculate the causes but in the end, they don't know why it happens to some dogs and not to others. The only connection they have proven is the large, deep chest.
Farewell, sweet Vegas. You are missed dearly.
If you need a shoulder or ear, please, feel free to PM or email me. I've been there.. only a short 4 months ago.

Thank you so much for your kind words and prayers. I just felt so helpless watching him suffer. Thank God it was only for a short time. He didn't deserve his fate. He is now in a leash free world with lots of Greyt friends waiting for him to play. Love you Vegas buddy. Run free!

Hi Buchanans -
Your post brought tears to my eyes - don't know if you remember my hubby (very tall guy...) and I but we were at GRA together with you guys on the day when you chose Vegas and we chose Fair Maiden/Barkley.......
I know how attached we've become to her....and I really feel for you guys.... I remember being a kid and losing a pet - it is a really hard thing..... I am so sorry for your loss.
At least Vegas had a great family and 3 boys who loved him and this is a great great thing you gave him.
I hope you'll be able to make room in your hearts for another hound when the time is right. Hugs to you.
Nic

Oh no!!! How horrible for you and your family. No matter how long you had Vegas, losing a family member is always hard. We'll be thinking of you and your family during this difficult time.

I loss my first grey suddenly too and the pain of the sudden loss runs deep... It is ok to feel lost and not sure what to do...take care of yourself and your family...and take comfort in knowing that you gave Vegas the best gifts - a forever home, a family and love.

We are so sorry. Vegas was a lucky boy to have you as his family, even though it was only for a short time. Sending hugs and healing thoughts. Grieving is different for each of us, take the time you need, but know that you did the very best for him, and he knew he was loved and won't be forgotten.

I am so sorry for your loss. How tragic and I'm sure very traumatic for all you to witness. I still have tears running down my cheeks. We also brought our five year old hounds home in the latter half of May and we also have three young children, so I can relate to how quickly these beautiful animals become an integral part of your family and how hard it must be to say goodbye. As others have already expressed, take comfort in knowing that Vegas knew he was loved and would have been so happy to have found a loving and lively home. Take care of yourselves and I hope your kids are doing OK. They will be better off for having had Vegas as a part of their family and for having a chance to love him, even if for too short of a time. Hang in there,
Nadine

I join the countless others in offering my heartfelt condolences for your family. Vegas was obviously so very fortunate to have spent quality time with a loving and caring family. As hard as a sudden death is to experience, Vegas at least experienced it with persons he loved - not with strangers or alone. My prayers for all of you - and Vegas - go with you.
