Holy doodle, that's some laceration! I didn't think they could fit 40 staples on a greyhound's face! Very good to know that there was no damage to the eye.
He'll likely feel a bit sick until the anasthesia drugs have passed throough his system, you might want to stick with a rice/broth mix until his tummy has settled.
I'm sorry to hear you're sick too - rotten timing. Sending healing energy to both of you.

Hotwire won't eat anything yet. I think that I am just sick from being so worried. I know that last night and today are most likely going to be the worst, so I hope it starts to look up from here. Thanks for all the support.

You will see improvement in the next 24 hours, these greys are amazingly resilient and heal very quickly. When Sadie and Storm were attacked, (by a Newfoundlander!) they had so many stitches and staples you couldn't even count them, and they recovered amazingly rapidly. It was less than a week before they returned to their old schedule, and within a month you could hardly tell there'd been anything wrong!

He has eaten a few spoonfuls of yogurt, so I was able to sneak some Flagyl in to help with the big D. He seems a bit perkier now, but Hope is still really upset. She has barely come out of the closet for 2 days now, and she hasn't eaten since yesterday's breakfast.

Do you have any Rescue Remedy or Animal Rescue on hand? It might help calm them down a bit. I've had great sucess with Animal Rescue, but there's not a lot of distributors around. With either, if you put a dropperful on their head, just behind the "bump", it eases anxiety. That spot is an accupressure trigger point for anxiety.
Edited to add: you could use some yourself! I do.

Poor thing.
When Orion was recovering from his anaesthesia, I made him scrambled eggs. Just fry up 2 fork scrambled eggs in a small amount of butter or margarine. See if he'll take that. It's good protein for him and it may help his tummy a little.
Poor Hope. I hope she returns to normal soon.
How's Connor doing?

everyone ate breakfast this morning. We were finally able to give Hotwire his antibiotics and painkillers today, although he has a bit of an infection in the eye already. We have a checkup today at 11. Hope is more comfortable, and thanks Karen (kjw) rescue remedy is a constant in our house! Connor seems OK, like nothing happened. I will update soon.

It's a good thing dogs really live in the now, it's really helpful sometimes!
You'll need to watch them and see if this was just a play accident, or if the pack dynamics are shifting - if it's the latter, you'll want to honor whatever decision the hounds make, otherwise there'll be trouble. But from what you've said, it does sound more like rough play, you see a lot of open mouthing of heads with that, and as you know, it doesn't take much! Muzzles will be your friend in any case!

The vet is happy with the progress. She said that the tear was clean, and she is not concerned with his eye at all. (we couldn't start the anti-biotics till he started eating today) She said that this time the greyhound "zipper skin" was an advantage, most cuts like that would have included some of the structures of the eye. She also laughed and said that Hotwire should have his own medical fund for how often they have seen him.

Happy to hear the vet appointment went well! Gee, maybe if Hotwire promises to tell all his friends about your vet, she'll give you a discount lol.
