I just wanted to make everyone aware that there is a Canine Blood Donorship program in London, ON.
All of my guys are regular donors in the program, save for Atlas because of a heart murmur.
Many folks I speak to have not heard of this before, but it can be, and often is, lifesaving for your special canine. Just look at the posts about Cleo's sudden illness and her heroine, Scarlett.
They donate on about a 6 week rotation, depending on the number of dogs in the program. They don't have to be greyhounds either, as long as your dog has the right blood type, is illness free and can handle laying still while a bunch of people lavish attention upon them, then they could be candidates.
Londoners: If you are interested, give the Emergency Veterinary Clinic a shout and set up an appointment to speak to Evelyn. She will explain the process and the benefits available to you.
If you live outside of the London area, talk to your vet. There are programs like this all over North America.

Our Ty is now on the list of donors ... It really takes very little time. We live in St.Marys and drive to London (about 40 mins) and this is the longest part of the whole thing. We are thinking of getting our Lab tested as well. Can a dog be typed at our vet and if he is the right type then get him involved in the program? Tara

Tara I don't know if they'll allow that because in addition to know of the blood type, they want to know what the dog is like too and how they react to the equipment. They also test for various blood-borne diseases.

Shani and Popcorn are regular donors at the London clinic as well and have been for the past 5 years. We only get called every month or so and the dogs love the staff there. It doesn't take too long; it usually takes us longer to get there than it does for the blood donation.

Thanks Jiffer! We need donors right now- unfortunatley we are running low! Anyone who is interested has a dog between 2-7years old, spayed/neutered, and a calm temperment is a canidate. Greyhounds are best because I love them . The number for the clinic is 519-432-7341. It is better if we can blood test them at the e-clinic because as Jiffer says we like to meet them, and we will need to take their blood for a "blood donor profile". We also try them on the table where we take the blood from to make sure they are not too scared or wiggly. The blood donor program is great- it is wonderful that something so simple can make such a difference to a sick dog. Syd has been in a program since I got him which only a short break when he was having his surgeries. Anyways thanks, anyone interested give us a call. Brandy and Syd

Can they give blood after they are 7, if they are in good health. Hobbes is 7 now but it's something I'm interested in. I dont want to do anything that wouldn't be good for him though.

The Ontario Veterinary College at UofG in Guelph also needs blood donors and if you live closer to Guelph they have a similar program. They like to get greys because their red blood count is higher than other dogs. With our last dog (nongrey) we needed to use their services and got top notch service and advice. We are planing to go there to repay them for their help.

My greys are all too old (8, 10, 11) and have medical "issues" that would probably prevent them from being good donors.
I have a question though: can they still donate if they are/were TBD positive? Even if they have never developed the actual TBD?

We may bring our Lab in next time Ty gets called in ... the staff are great in London. Ty thinks his going there is some kind of vacation. Last time he was there he was whining because they weren't taking him in the back as quick as he would like. I don't know crazy dog! If your dog can donate please do it ... I think of how I would feel if one of my guys needed blood ... I would be so thankful for those who take the time to donate. Tara

I'm pretty sure that is the case; I vaguely remember someone saying that once before. Both Mandy and Shadow tested positive years ago but have never developed the actual TBD. We don't know about Onyx as we've never had him tested. We adopted him as a rehome at 8 years old and have not needed to test him.

Hey I'm chiming in- sorry I don't have the net so its only when I'm at work and having nothing to do (never) that I get a chance to read anything. We don't generally accept dogs into the program that are over 7 just because they are getting up there and we don't want to stress out their bodies. Dogs that are in the program and that are healthy and are "good" donors we use past their 8th birthdays as long as their parents are okay with it. Any kind of disease we find even if it is just an antibody we can't use just because if we passed it along to another dog that was a carrier or susceptible to it they would be much more apt to get said disease. I thank everyone who calls we can always use more donors. If you have any questions again, call the clinic (519) 432-7341. If you don't like in the London area most emergency clinics do a similar program (ie. OVC). Brandy and Syd
