Just wondering if anyone use this with their dogs? Ty has an ankle that cracks when he gets up (as well as the knuckles on his toes) and it was suggested that I try glucosimine. What size caplets do you use, do you use ones found at pet store or human grade? Thanks, Tara

A lot of people use human Glucosamine, but I prefer Tri-acta. Tri-acta is a blend of MSM, Glucosamine, and Chondroitan made for animals. When Perry was 4, her knees creaked. A lot. I started her on Tri-acta. She's now 8 1/2, and her knees are still quiet. Tri-acta is made by Integricare ( www.integricare.ca), and sold by vets and some pet stores, including Ren's Pets Depot in Oakville ( www.renspets.com).

We give Gigi Dr. Maggie's Extra Strength Joint Formula which is Glucosomine and Chondroitin. It is available at some of the Ryan's Pet foods and Dr. Maggies always has a booth at the Royal Winter Fair which is how I found out about them in the first place. We have given her some sort of Glucosomine ever since she adopted us. She came off of the track with a broken leg and our vet at the time recommended that the sooner we start the better as their joints have seen a lot more stress in a very short period of time, especially if they have had a long racing career. We definitely see a difference in Gigi if she does not get the supplement. There was a 2 week period where I kept forgetting to pick it up and by the end of that time she was stiff getting up etc. and the recovered broken leg was not working as well as it had been. Buy I am going to try some of the supplement that GreyPoopon suggested as Ren's is just down the road from where my daughter rides and sometimes I think a change is good. Thanks for the info!

I used to buy the brand name human grade mine was 500mg glucosamine with 300 mg of MSM Sunny has not been on for several years he used to limp and cry when trying to stand he, he had broke his leg racing, had back problems and a knee problem several years ago is 9 now and shows no signs of problems and I recently had Nikki my 10 year old eskie x-rayed (Winnie was playfighting with her and grabbing her legs which result in him hitting a nerve and causing pain and her leg not to suppport her) but the vet want to check her for arthritis at the same time due to her age while trying to figure out what was going on, the vet was very surprised as bone and joint wise she looks like a 5 or 6 year old more surprising was her knees because at 2 year old she had mild patella problems and no signs of problems there. I read this article yesterday just yesterday I have been feeding a grain free diet for a few years now which is high protein and closer resembles a raw diet protein.fat and carb wise, so could very well have some truth to it, I originally switched because Sunny's weight kept climbing and got even worse going to a diet food eating the recommended feeding for a 10 to 20 lb dog and I did test to rule out hypothyroidism, he was bottom end of normal so try him on thyroid replacement but weight still climbed, with EVO had dropped and holding now even though he is consuming almost 3 times the calories of the diet food I have had dogs for a lot of years and have never seen any thing like this weight problem before other than with Callie who I had to fight to keep weight on her

My vet recommended regular glucosamine condroiten from the pharmacy, dont buy the stuff at pet stores or vets, its much cheaper to get it at shoppers and is completely safe, my rottie gets 3000MG a day, she is 10

I buy Human grade Glucosamine (Jamieson brand) and give 500mg to each dog, who needs maintenance, daily. For Echo (because she's 9) and Atlas (because he suffered a broken leg that forced his retirement), I also give them one Glucosamine (500mg), Chondroitin (400mg), MSM (400mg) combination pill that I buy at Costco (brand name escapes me) daily. My vet recommended this combination and also told me that Atlas can be given up to 1500mg of Glucosamine daily if I feel he needs the extra dosage.
