Well for those of you who know (and those who don't) Syd has been battling a broken leg that won't heal for the last few month. He has had several surgeries and been in a cast since January. Last week we finally had to make the decision that I have been trying to avoid but his joint became septic (from the awful pressure sore he developed from his cast d/t his thin skin). We decided that it was time to amputate the leg last week and now my little Syd is a three-legged greyhound. He had surgery on Thursday and stayed at the clinic with my all weekend (because I was working anyway) and when he woke up from the surgery I took him out to pee and he ran for the first time in months! Today he stole some treats off the counter (which he also hasn't done in months) and tonight at work he was back to his not listening games of running laps around the barn (of course in the dark- silly dog). So no more crying for Syd's mom he is doing fantastic. He is so much happier and will be back to donating blood again soon (he took a break while he was sick) and now the blood donor program will have a 3-legged mascot. Anyone who comes in feel free to bug me to see my funny looking little man (he certainly loves the attention) and thanks to everyone who came to the clinic who has been asking about him. Look forward to seeing everyone soon (heartworm season). Have a great day. Lots of Love Brandy and Syd

That must have been a very hard decision for you to make! I'm sure seeing Syd run and play more than makes up for that. Sometimes we forget that, being quadrapeds, dogs adjust well to the loss of a limb. Your story put a smile on my face at the beginning of the day!!!
Thanks!

What a horrible situation. But it sounds as though Syd is going to adjust well. Go steal some more treats Syd.

Oh Brandy that makes me so happy to hear. Evelyn mentioned that he was having a hard time ... and that you were too.
Next time we're there, I would love to see dear Syd. He's such a special boy and has an even more special mommy!
Big hugs and ear scritches!

It sounds like being a tripod is not so bad after all. Happy recovery!

Three wheel drive is not much different than four huh? It is so nice to hear a good result!

Sorry to hear about your little one. Glad he's doing better. There is a dog on my friends street that was hit by a car and lost his back leg. Well you should see this dog run, he is faster than all the others. You actually have to take a double look to confirm what you just saw. He gets around no differently than if he had 4 legs. It is quite remarkable.

So sorry to hear Syd lost his leg. Hoping his recovery will be speedy and without complication. We're in the north part of town. Give us a shout if you'd like to get together for a walk.
