Emily's got us a little concerned today. This afternoon, she started extending her neck out and swallowing. Her Adam's apple is quite prominent in doing so. Once in a while she coughs, as if to clear her throat. It's very unnatural. It seems to come in waves. She didn't eat anything strange during her walk and nothing around the house has disappeared. Nothing of relevance during meal time - no choking during food or drink. She's eating well. She did ask to go outside after a few minutes of swallowing, only to chew on grass. Her nose is cold and wet, as it should be. GT has some very frightening possibilities. If anything, it's making us paranoid. I just want to wait and see if it persists before consulting. In the meantime, inquire as to whether that's been an issue in the past with your hounds. Maybe it's a 'hare' ball!

Brandy did this exact same thing last evening. She seems to do this every so often, maybe about once every 3 months or so, and has, ever since we got her, 3 years ago. She had been licking herself and then quite suddenly gets up and starts hacking, almost acts like she is choking and her Adam's apple stands out quite prominent and it is very disconcerting to watch. We let her go outside and she eats grass, and then she calms down. She was fine afterward and is fine today, so I am not worrying about it unless it happens more frequently. Maybe you aren't to far off by suggesting a 'hare' ball. I'm wondering if Brandy got a little fur caught in her throat from licking herself and it tickled.

Stricker does this too every few months or so. I do notice however that when it happens his back end is completely wet and sometimes all the hair is bare. Perhaps it is a hair ball because the hair is irritating him. The other thing we noticed is sometimes he hates blankets in his crate so he will eat them if he doesn't want it there, and he will cough for a few days and then it is over and done with. I just make sure lots of water is going down and I check the stools to see what if anything is coming out that shouldn't. The other day he did it but that is because he ate a biscuit too fast and started running around in circles immediately afterward. Similar to the don't eat right before you swim theory.
