Orion is home. Luckily at 4 he decided to try standing and was successful (if he never stood up, he would have had to stay at the Evet overnight). He's still a wee bit drunk from the sedation. He was panting extremely hard when he first came home, but has now relaxed a bit. When he lays down, he does stop panting. He's been out in the yard a few times for a good pee or twelve and a poop. They gave him IV fluids all afternoon to bring his temp down. He's not bleeding bad at all, in fact, just a drip here or there. They pretty much pulled all the teeth except his big molars at the back, his canines and his fronts (few interspersed in there). He's very tired and wants to sleep but I think he's afraid to take his eyes off me and Rene.
Thanks everyone for the good and positive thoughts.
ETA: He just starting licking his arms, a good sign. Orion's favourite thing is to lick his forearms. LOL

I'm glad he is home. Poor boy. You must have been very frightened. At least he is in good hands. Poor thing I have never heard of a dog losing their teeth but then again I am new to Greyhounds.

I'm glad he's returned to one of his favourite activities--that's a very good sign.
Sleep well Orion.

I'm so sorry to hear about Orion! Malignant hyperthermia is something they teach us at school (veterinary technician) but something that is not seen very often at all! I must say that if Orion had to spend the night at the emerg. you can bet that Syd and I would take fantastic care of him It's great that he had fluids and most often that can help more than anything else. It sounds like your veterinarian did a fantastic job. I'm so glad to hear that he is feeling better tonight and I am sorry he lost so many teeth! All our love Brandy and Syd

Thanks everyone. janis- I know he'll feel much better. In the past month, his teeth started to bother him. Even eating became slower and he's a big chow hound. rhyddpe - sorry, by losing I meant he had them pulled. They were pretty much rotten and I wanted them out before they made him sick. He's doing well this morning. I fed him some scrambled eggs after he refused to touch the soggy kibble I made for him. He had a pretty good evening and night, uneventful is a good word to describe it. He only got up a few times to get a drink. He looks more like my Ori today which makes me very happy. He even did a little gallop in the yard after he pooed (he always celebrates pooing.. LOL) I'm so relieved that he's better. Yesterday was one of the scariest experiences. I just kept praying and "talking to him" from afar. As for blood from all those extractions. He's not dropping any and it's mostly clotted in his tooth holes. The worst of it was in the car on the way home yesterday, but he was still panting quite heavily then. Actually, his mouth is pretty darned clean looking and the teeth he did keep are pearly white!

Last update on this one... thank goodness. Orion saw Dr. Hoover yesterday for a post-op checkup. His gums are healing and filling in beautifully. Aside from having some small chewing issues (the turkey neck we gave him on Saturday was very amusing to watch), he's doing fabulous. Overall, his breath is better, he is more active and has even become more affectionate. As for his opinion of the vet office... well, lets just say he's not as happy to go there as he was originally Dr. Hoover again stressed that if he needed another procedure done, we'd definitely consider other options and has noted in his file that he has troubles with anaesthesia.

I am just ready glad to here Orion is doing well, the hyperthermia is definitely scary and it is something that would have every time under gas anesthesia meaning is would have happened during neutering as a result I feel it should become part of the information that should be sent along as part of the adoption record because too often greyhounds die as a result, Dr Feeman has an article about it greyhound-data.com/dir/442/Anesthetic_Malignant_Hyperthermia.pdfI have tried obtaining Maya'a spay records so as to know what complications she had as we know she has a bloodclotting disorder and suffers from stress related hyperthermia, and the vet and I wanted to know whether she has the anesthesia form as well but no luck, even with the known problems I am dreading any surgery with her.
