Hi everyone Tavi had his first vet visit today and the vet recommended Revolution as a heartworm preventative/flea, tick killer. Just been doing some research and it seems Revo doesnt prevent against certain intestinal parasites like hookworm - i live in an area with tons of dogs so am thinking transmission of worms could be quite common here... So Im not sure what to do - go with revo and treat with deworming medication if he needs it (but this could be costly if i have to do multiple visits to the vet for medication and assessment) or go with 2 separate medications like heartgaurd and advantage? Any suggestions? Pros/cons? Thanks guys!

Just thought of one more thing - what about using Sentinel? It seems similar to revo but seems to help with hook worms

I've used Heartgard and Advantage as well as Sentinel. Honestly, go with Sentinel. Advantage is nice to have on hand if you detect fleas on your pup (use when necessary since it kills the flea, where Sentinel only sterilizes them) and you can safely do both if you have to. We have a lot of wood in our house and Advantage does a number on it (it can actually peel paint off walls and finish off wood).

I use Sentinel. Last year I overheard one of the techs suggesting something else, so I'm going to try to remember to ask, but I'm sure the vet would tell me to switch if she preferred an alternative.

Thanks guys, I'll talk to the vet about sentinel then - I think they are around the same price anyway.. and then look into picking up some advantage in case we need that as well. GreyPoopon - if you find out what the vet tech was suggesting let us know!

We used Advantage because:
a)We have 7+ animals in the house and all parasites are undesirable (things could get outta control real quick around here)
b)it is the only heartworm medication that doesn't require pre-medication heartworm test. It will not cause harm if your hound is positive for heartworm where others will.

ps Jiffer is right though, advantage will strip the paint/stain of your wood furniture!

GreyPoopon - if you find out what the vet tech was suggesting let us know! Revolution, because it protects against things like ticks, mange, and earmites that Sentinel does not. I discussed it with the vet, and she said she'd recommend Revolution if we were going to a cottage. We don't, and mange and ticks are not common here. So I opted to stay with Sentinel, which all can tolerate.
