Roman has been whimpering for the past week or so and I can't for the life of me figure out the cause of it. It usually occurs as he begins to lay down...right around the time when his bum makes contact with the bed. I thought maybe he had a sore hip, but I felt each hip/buttock area thoroughly and he shows no signs of pain or sensitivity. When he lays down, he will usually just whimper once and that's it, as if to say "ouch!". And the next time he repositions himself he'll usually do it again. Also, he lies on his bed without sleeping much more than usual, and he is more restless, which leads me to think he's not comfortable. He also has a growing lipoma (fat lump) on his rib cage (yes, it has been biopsied last summer). I initially thought that discomfort from the lump was the cause of his whimpering but I don't think it is. He also showns no signs of pain or sensitivity when I touch that area either. Before I rush off to the vet, is there anything I can do to figure this out? If I'm feeling around to find the source of pain with no luck, I can't see how the vet will be able to determine anything either. However, I'd hate to leave it to get worse.... Any opinions on what I should do? Thanks

Honestly, hon. I think a vet visit is in order. Just be sure to note when he whimpers. The vet will do some manipulations with him to find his tender spots, if it is a joint.
Keep us posted!
(You know, he may be just whimpering for a buddy.. you know how lonely they get... *ducking and running* )

Other thoughts could be his back, or maybe he pulled an abdominal muscle, did you check the rest of his leg and inside thigh near the groin. Even the shoulders could be a possibly as they are taking weight at that point, but I would take very seriously if he is not normally a whimperer, the restlessness would also be an indicator of pain. My prayers is that it is nothing serious

Roman hasn't been whimpering hardly at all the past few days. I'm going to hold off on the vet unless it starts up again. He was really throwing me off though because he has been moving around on his bed lately with no complaints at all, but he will be lying there dead still and let out a little whimper. Is it possible that it was a muscle spasm of some sort? I will definitely keep an eye on him and if it starts up again I'll bring him to the vet ASAP. Thanks Jen for the offer this weekend, but I'll be in TO! But PM me if u want to go for a walk anytime next week!!

Zooks has been acting similarly lately, buts its mostly throughout the night. I find its because he's cold. Does he wear PJs to bed or a sweater?

I know Mr. Roman is not a spring chick and it is possible that he just needs some extra added warmth in the form of a PJ. Also, it is not unheard of having a mild arthritis in the joins at this age so if things are not better in 7 to 10 days, you should see the vet. But please, don't put him on steroids for that problem. Instead of that PM me, I have an awesome and tested natural remedy for it.

I've come to a novice conclusion that it's actually in the front of him that's the problem...perhaps his shoulders? He can go into the sit position with no problem, but as soon as he bends down for a treat on the floor he yelps. We'll see what Dr. Staples has to say about it

Update on Roman's whimpering: We were at the vet today and I described Roman's whimpering to him, and teh fact that he's been doing it for a while. He manipulated Roman's head and neck and shoulders (we've narrowed it down to the front end of him being the source of discomfort). Roman didn't whimper or complain at all....in fact, he was the perfect patient as usual! So, it didn't result in many answers. He said to keep an eye on the him becoming lame in the front end, or for any stiffness. He thinks it could be a slipped disc in his vertebrea, but Roman's not showing definite symptoms of that right now. If there's any further problems we might do an x-ray of his spine. For now, he does not whimper nearly as much and I haven't heard it at all in at least a few days. So hopefully it was just a muscle cramp of some sort, but we will be keeping an eye on him just in case.

P.S. forgot to say in my previous update that according to the vet, Mr. Roman's packin' some extra "junk in the trunk"....he's gained 7lbs since the summer, yikes!!! He's a whopping 85lbs right now!! Last winter he didn't get past 80lbs, so I think it's time for some extra walks
