Dash's nails seem to grow very quickly and I try to cut them whenever they start to touch the floor. I do it when he looks as if he is in a deep sleep but then he becomes suddenly awake and starts jerking his foot away as I'm trying to clip. I accidentally cut the quick today and I felt horrible. Now he is going to hate it even more. Any tips on how to do this with the least amount of trauma?

stuff him full of food at dinner, cover him up with a blankie in his bed or favourite spot, wait till he's warm and sleepy and zonks out and do one nail at a time quietly with a cookie in your hand as a reward for when he comes to to see what you're doing. If you only get 1 nail done thatt's ok - stroke the whole leg shoulder to toes -sit flat on the floorand don't lean over top of him..,just pick up the paw from the side -don't tickle the pads-eventually you'll be able to do a couple or more at a time, but never make him think you're ambushing him in his sleep (even if you are

Thanks for the great advice. I know I'll be able to do one nail at a time, and then work my way up to two. Too stressful to do more right now for both me and my dog.

Take him to a groomer and have them clip all back as short as possible then to maintain use a nail file or emery board every other day to prevent them from growing out then you won't have to worry about clipping them

I would be very hesitant cutting nail when they are sleeping or even when they look like they are in a deep sleep. The last thing you need is for them to wake up bitting/nipping incase you cut the quick. The way we started with Rocco was put his leash on wrap it around the wrist in your hand so there is no slack, stand above him (we cut outside) take one foot at a time and turn it back and snip, your done.
After a few times like this he got used to it so now we don't even need the leash anymore, Meme same thing she's fine now.

Or use a Dremel with a sanding drum, so there is less risk of error. Edited to clarify: the sandpaper tube, not a grinding drum.

I grind, as well. She's still not comfortable with the idea, but she gets a reward after every paw.
I wonder how she'd react if I took the clippers out of storage...

I get their nails trimmed at the groomer, then do small trims at home in between. Hope's nails are so dark, I get nervous doing more than a small trim. I want to see someone else use the dremmel before I try it on my guys, 'cause I am a nervous mom! I want to make sure I am doing it right.

I take our boy to the groomer, but I have to warn whoever is cutting his nails because he absolutely loves it and falls asleep. The minute you touch any part of his foot or leg he is totally attached to you. I had to laugh once I took him to a new groomer and they tied him up twice and I told the girl, no need he isn't going anywhere and I think our boy actually if he could speak would have said the same thing, sure enough she started trimming and his eyes got really heavy and he was in la la land.

Dremmel here too! When you dremmel (use low 1 or 1.5 speed) you can feel that when the sanding feels "sticky" like you are sanding wet wood, it is your indicator that you are close to live tissue.
The other thing is that the dremmel is so quick that even when you hit the nerve it would cauterize the bleeding. My hounds are not exactly in love with the process but at least they are not shaking, whimpering and pulling the feet away. I have never had a problem by drummeling.
