Hey everyone,
So here's the story...Chase and I were on our walk tonite and as we were walking down the sidewalk i saw a lady walking her dalmation, he was pretty excited and definetely pulling on her leash. Which I usually just keep my eye on to make sure the dog isn't going to lunge at Chase. Well she yells out...oh, he's friendly don't worry, and proceeds to let him out on his retractable leash. But really, I'm nervous whenever people do that...so i'm trying to keep myself between Chase and her dog, well of course Chase being the friendly dog he is gets interested. So this dog comes over and what does he do? Bites right down on Chases snout, and CHase stands there not protecting himself, then he looks at me as if to say "Why'd he do that"? Anyways...the dog broke his skin, and it didn't draw blood immediately...but it is going to scab over. I asked the woman if her dog had had his shots, and she said yes. Besides that i've just cleaned it out.
I'm just wondering if anyone has had this situation happen to them before. This is Chase's first "wound", and i know that animal bites can be serious, so i'm curious as to what my next step should be.
Sorry for the long post Jen

My next move would be to smack the Dal's owner! I just detest those retractable leashes and the people that use them! ARGH! I think cleaning out the wound quickly which you did and even using a q-tip with peroxide would be a good idea. I'd just keep cleaning it and watch to make sure it doesn't appear to get infected. Poor Chase. He certainly didn't need that!

My instinct is to tell people to back off. If the dog is unattended or off leash, I growl at it.. Yes GROWL in my deepest, scariest, throatiest growl.
I don't let any strange dog approach my four... friendly or not. I have had an ongoing injury battle with Icarus since May 05 because of "friendly" dogs being less than friendly. Since May 05, there have been four other occurances. I am not taking chances anymore. I don't even care that the vet bills are getting scary, I just want my baby to stop limping and be normal and happy again.
Anyway, if the owners don't take your cues that you aren't open to approach, then tell them so. I will even go as far as to say, "My dog doesn't like X because he's been attacked by one" (X being whatever breed the dog is).
Often I'll go a step further and cross the street or walk on the street away from the oncoming dog.

I second the slapping the owner, then I would want proof of the dogs shots being up to date. Then I'd slap the owner again. Tyson is very eager to want to play but we keep walking. He even knows that as a command "Keep walking" means we don't stop. We had a leash aggressive husky one day growling and snarling at him. We walked waaaayyy out and around the owner and the dog. The owner actually said to me "he wouldn't hurt them his bark is bigger than his bite" Well really I don't like either. I would call my vet just to see what he recommends, he may say antibiotics just to be safe unless you know alot about the dog. Just my uneducated opinion. Tara

I'm still laughing!

I have some spray our vet gave me to have on hand for minor cuts, bites, scratches, etc. It's called Cothivet (all natural ingredients and works really well) I've never had a problem with other dogs but people seem nervous of me because I'm walking with four pups. Some even turn around so they don't have to pass us!

Honestly, I am sick and tired of meeting people on the street that are so ignorant of dog behaviour. People let their dogs off leash on traffic streets, non-dog parks, in front of their homes etc. and I am tired of being the dog owner who ALWAYS has a leashed dog (except in our backyard) and I am the one who must contend with the off-leash pets and their totally stupid owners. I was walking Emily just about a month ago now and an owner let their dog off leash on the sidewalk way behind us, well the dog came tearing up the sidewalk making a bee line for us while the owner slowly sauntered along behind not even calling her dog back. I kept it at bay by yelling very deep loud "no"'s but it was barking and circling us. I just wish I could walk free of mind that all dogs would be leashed and managed by their owners who supposedly know them best. Was this person surprised to discover that their friendly dog bit another?

Poor Chase!!
I'd tell the idiot that if his/her dogs bite my dog, friendly or not, shots or not, then I will bite him/her, and I'm definitely not friendly and I certainly don't have my shots!!

When I walk my dogs I tend to go armed. I sawed off a broom handle about 2 feet and drilled a hole in one end to loop a piece of thin rope through and carry it around my waist. When I meet an unfriendly dog I will whip it out and if the dog comes within whacking distance I'll nail him whether the owner is there or not. It's worked so far.

How about whacking the irresponsible owner instead??
