Today as Scarlett ran out for a potty break, she ran too close to our outside fireplace and tore a big patch of skin back on her right front leg. It looked awful and I could see flecks of dirt and rust from the metal of the fireplace, in it. I immediately called the vet and she now has five stitches.(she was very brave!! Anyway, she ignored it for a while but now that the freezing has worn off, she is starting to lick it. We are off for the weekend and will be able to watch her, but I am afraid that when she is alone for about 4-1/2 - 5 hours on Monday, she will start licking and picking at it. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what we can do to prevent her from doing that??

A sock put on her leg with it wrapped at the top with bandage tape to hold it on. This worked quite well to prevent licking with Emily's recent torn webbing on her foot. Hugs for brave Scarlett.

If you use a sock/boot, try it while you're in the house. I put an inexpensive felt boot on Betsy one day, and she ate it.

Thank you both for your suggestions. The stitches are up farther on her leg, kind of just below her elbow. I am going to cut the foot off a sock and use the leg part to cover the stitches and then tape it at the top and the bottom. I will do this today and tomorrow, while we are with her in the hope that she will be used to it and leave it alone when she is by herself on Monday. thanks again! Lois

You can buy a cream from the vet that prevents them from licking too. I can't remember much about it, but when Roman got stiches at the beginning of the summer, we bought it so he wouldn't lick the site. However, his cut was at the back/inside of his leg, so anytime we applied it, it would rub off on his bed . A sock is obviously a cheaper route to take, but I thought I'd mention the cream just in case! Feel better soon Scarlett!

Poor Scarlett! I just wanted to suggest a bandage product. It has several names; Coban, Vet wrap, or Pet wrap. It adheres to itself, so no sticky stuff, and it works for the weirdest of injuries. I always have it for my horse, and now my pups. I find it is the cheepest as sold for the horses, and it comes in funky colours! LOL I use that with Bitter apple spray or Chew-stop. Good luck.

How did Scarlett do today while you were out? She did great!! I am so pleased with her. She is such a good girl and is pretty obedient. On the weekend, I spoke to her a couple of times when I saw her licking her stitches, and she immediately stopped. I realized after a while that she wasn't touching them anymore, so I decided not to put a wrap on her leg, because I was afraid that it might annoy her and bother her to the point of really picking at it. I think she gives it a couple of licks now and then,(which I figure keeps it clean), but isn't biting at the stitches like I was worried that she would do. The vet did such a good job of stitching, that the wound looks very clean and barely noticeable (the stiches are light and blend in with her fur) even though it is about a couple of inches long and has been left open at one end for draining. The stitches will be coming out on the 23rd. Thanks again everyone. We really appreciated all the suggestions.
