I just wanted to share with you that Icarus had his first seizure in about six months this morning sometime between 6 and 7a.m.
For those of you who don't know him, he has mild epilepsy. During his episodes, he is fully conscious, though stares straight forward, he can stand (but is very wobbly; he sways back and forth; yet he refuses to lay down), he has head wobbles, his nose leaks like a faucet and he drools a great lot. If I don't tend to him when he gets to this point, he'll usually vomit and pee (uncontrollably). These symptoms may or may not happen (ie: he doesn't always pee).
For quite some time he used to have these episodes often, until I discovered that he triggers with low blood sugar and stress. I now give him a treat before bedtime and they have become infrequent. Stress is hard to cope with, since strange things tend to stress him out. Chances are this one is stress induced since we're in the process of packing/moving and preparing for Hugs. He feeds off my feelings a lot as well and I know I'm feeling the pressure.
Anyway, my reason for writing is that usually if he has one episode, it usually sets off a cluster (one or two a day for up to a week). I need a few spare thoughts that it doesn't happen this time. I don't want to have to leave Hugs early because my Baby-boy is sick.

Oh no!!! We didn't know Icarus had this problem... poor guy. Hopefully, he'll feel more calm amongst his own kind at HUGS. We'll be thinking of him.

Thanks guys. He seems fine tonight which is a good sign. This isn't a new issue for Icka-doodle. Bill warned me of a possible epilepsy problem when I adopted him almost three years ago He had his first seizure about 2 weeks after I adopted him. Now that was scary, especially since it was on a walk in the winter when it happened.

J:
I was wondering if both of Icarus's epilepsy triggers might be the same. Perhaps stress has an impact on his blood sugar, possibly indirectly through his metabolism. Maybe an extra cookie or two would help during stressful times.
Hope to see you tomorrow.

Edited to note: So far he's doing fine.. knock on wood

No doubt you've already thought about Bach's Rescue Remedy -- for both of you?!? Stay strong and keep well, both of you!! Hugs, Anna and Dotty

Thanks everyone! Icarus is doing well, so far. He's up to his ears in boxes in our house right now but so far, he's holding out. He had a lot of fun at Hugs and was so tired afterwards he didn't even get up to get his treat from me when I went out. I've been a lurker on a Canine Epilepsy board for a few years now (the name escapes me at the moment). It was a wonderful support centre when I first brought Icarus home.
