hello- just wanted to know if anyone has had to administer some sort of first aid to any of their greys. sy was running in the backyard on monday and seems to have ripped his paw (close to the pad). i noticed him limping after he did it, but he stopped a couple minutes after. he's been licking at it all week and i thought it was better, but we looked at it again tonight and it's not. does anyone know of anything i can put on it before i call the vet in the morning? i know it's late, but you never know and i thought i'd try. thanks- lisa

I'd clean it out really well and perhaps, if he'll let you, soak it in epson salts or if you're able to head out to a drug store, ask the pharmacist for something called Busporal or something like that. It helps pull out the infection. This is what the vet prescribed for Taylor when she hurt her paw. You just want to make sure there's nothing stuck in the pad or between the toes that is irritating Sy which is making him lick. It may also be sore which is why he's licking. Keep up posted!

I believe it's safe to use Polysporin. I usually use oribiotic oil, which is an anti-everything medicine that I got from the vet (for ear infections, but safe/effective for cuts too).

I usually wash the area affected with soap and water then put on Polysporin.....then I wrap it .....loosely......with the elastic bandages that are used to wrap horses legs....TSC store.....then to keep them from licking it for a day or two I'll put on one of the boots that are to be worn in the winter. I never use them on the dogs in the winter....I bought them specifically for this purpose.

Jenn and all - Well, he seems to be ok. Last night he licked the paw like crazy. He hasnt really been limping so we took him for his morning walk and all seemed fine. When we got home, we flushed the wound really well - he was a sweetheart about it. After flushing the wound clean, we applied polysporin with a Q-tip. He was pulling the leg away but didnt seem to be mad about it. After polysporin was applied, we got an old CLEAN sock from my daughters drawer (the pair has been missing for awhile) and put it on his foot. To make sure it stayed on, we used sports tape to keep it in place. He doesnt seem to be too uncomfortable after his first few steps with the sock on. We will continue to monitor the wound and keep it clean. THANK YOU all for the suggestions and concern. Plus, he gets extra treats today. Lisa
