Hi, I am very happy your boy is filling better. Shouldn't he be dewormed before going for adpotion? I'll bring my Fran home next weekend, should I take her straight to the vet just in case for a check-up? I thought this supossed to be done before adoption? What is your advice? Thanx, Anna

With every adoption I always take my newest addition to the vet within the first week just to be checked out and especially if you have another dog in your home. I can't recall what GRA does before you adopt your dog but there are others here that will know. You must be very excited!

Tyson was dewormed in June I adopted him the beginning of Sept. He probably should have been okay, maybe?? Tyson's case was very mild or so the vet told me. We caught it early. It is not a very expensive treatment ($7.00 from my vet for two doses, the test was more). On Saturday I have to take him back have his stool tested at the same time. We will test our Lab to make sure he hasn't caught it. I have decided also to change from just plan "program" (flea control) to one that also has a dewormer in it (for a short period of time anyway). Congratulations on your new addition. We have only had Tyson for 2 and a half weeks but he is soooo much a part of the family. You will not believe you had a happy household without a grey in it before. I love my Lab but Ty has completed our family, even Remy (the Lab) is happier and more playful.

Hi to the new moms! The dogs are dewormed before adoption, but many types of worms are hard to get rid of or arn't taken care of in normal dewormer. They can also be re-infected by new dogs that came in to the kennel. I did a fecal exam on both my guys when they came home. Hope had whipworm, and Hotwire had a Tapeworm. Also, I like my vet to have met my dogs before there is a problem, so that we have a relationship and a file started. Congrats on the pups! There is good info about dog health and meds on this site. Thank-you, and congrats Anna on your new addition. I would recommend getting your pup checked. The type of worms Tyson had are the easiest to get rid of and I presume the most common (as it is assumed all newborn pups have them and are treated for round worms). I was told by my vet that when they tested Tyson they tested for all types (whip, round and hook, except heartworm). They are tested/dewormed before adoption however the lifecycle is such that it may not show up before you bring your baby home. Tyson was not at GRA long before we adopted him and had been dewormed the end of June before coming to GRA. We have had Ty less then three weeks and he has been treated and gotten over worms and the Big D, has gained about 5 pounds and is the new love of everyones life here including our other dog (he has to know where Ty is at all times). We have thought that when our fence gets put in we may have to get another one (grey that is). They are like potato chips you can't stop at just one. Tara

Thanks, The food he is on is hypo-allergenic, no wheat, corn or soy. Our Lab is highly allergic to wheat and has acid reflux (trust me I see Tyson's issue as a "This too shall pass" situation) it took us over a year and a half to find out what was wrong with Remy (Lab) and it was daily cleaning up his vomit NOT NICE. What is the little green machine? I've never heard of it. And the canned pumpkin really helped? I found one worm in his first stool after his first dose. They are disgusting and it is no wonder he was not feeling well.. On another note how do I post a picture below my name? Sorry I know it is off topic. Gotta go take the boys for a walk. Thanks again Ooops, sorry it took me so long to get back to you on this... Yup, pumpkin does definitely help with the Big D - it does not fix the problem but firms things up a bit so that it is easier to pick up and clean up! This bad boy is the little green machine: Here's a link to more info: www.totalvac.com/parts/bisselllittle.htmlFor a pic under your name you need to go into your profile (found in the top horizontal menu) and go down to Avatar...that is where you enter the pic (using the instructions on how to post pics in the technical questions) you would like seen under your handle (name). I read he is doing better, I hope it continues!

Thanks, I will be getting one of those. Between kids and dogs I think it will be money well spent.

I suggest getting the "pro-heat" model. It is a bit more expensive, but it heats the water up, the other model uses hot tap water.

An initial check up with your vet is always recommended. As a meet and greet and to resolve any issues. As it is said above, worms don't always show up right away and I don't think the standard wormer can treat larvae or eggs. At Orion's first check up, we wormed him (just in case) and a month later gave him a different type of wormer, just to make sure. We did not have problems with worms.
I hope your kids are all starting to feel better. At this time of year, I don't think it's uncommon to see dogs with "D". Mine have been into eating grass lately, and I have noticed a lot of people are treating their grass in order to winterize it. Not to mention that this time of year is bad for Doggie colds/flu.

Not to mention that this time of year is bad for Doggie colds/flu. Edie was sick (D) two weeks ago; last week both poodles were sick (both V, one D). I mentioned it to the vet, and she said that they're seeing a lot of similar stuff. In fact, both her dog (bloody D), and one of the other vet's (hospitalized for 5 days) seemed to have a virus.

Hope seems to be feeling better tonight, although we came home from work to find poo everywhere! Hope made a mess, and Hotwire tracked it all over the house. We have to wash everything. There were little poo paw prints on our bed. (Ewww, sorry for the visual) Hope is feeling much better now though. She was so sad that she messed in the house, she would not even look at us. I am hoping we can all sleep tonight!
