Hey guys! So Chase has finally gotten his first bout of the Big D Fortunately, it just happened to be on the day we were already heading to the vet for a check-up! So that helped out. so Chase is on metroniozade (sp?) and bland food diet for a few days. My question is..... since starting the bland food diet, Chase hasn't gone poop for the last 36 hours....we went from diarrhea to no poop. Is this normal? The vet said to call if his D hadn't stopped in 2-3 days...but i wouldn't know cause he hasn't gone... I'm a little worried, seeing as this is the first time going thru the Big D cycle. Jen

No poop is good. It means that the worst is over and things are firming up in there. When he goes depends on how empty he got, and how much he's eating, but I'd expect to see something within another 24 hours. It might be a tad soft, but it should be better than it was.
Edited to clarify that I meant 24 more hours. It does sometimes take 2-3 days.

Yep, definitely ok. If he totally emptied himself with the Big D, he's likely just building back up. Glad the runs have stopped and he's on the mend. Taylor's been on the same meds and she didn't go for a couple of days.

Hi everyone, We just adopted a beautiful big grey. We love him to death. However he has had the Big D since we got him. After two days I called my vet, took him a stool sample and he was diagnosed with round worms. The poor guy is trying his best and has never peed in the house but the stains left from his accidents from the Big D are really bad. He has had his first dose of dewormer (about 5 days ago). How long should I expect the Big D to last? And any recommendations about how to get the stains out (have used prosolve it works pretty well). I have scrubbed but still faint marks remain (we have very light coloured carpet). Thanks for any advice.

After the first dose (like the day after) could you see the worms in his poop? We did...it was absolutely disgusting but at least we knew the meds worked. When our first grey came home with worms (whipworms) we had a really hard time getting rid of them. His stomach was really upset so we had to temporarily put him on a bland diet (found in Greyhound for Dummies). It helped his GI system heal and got his poop nice and firm. Do you think it is possible that the brand of food your feeding your pup could be aggravating his system? And last but not least adding canned pumpkin to the kibble helps firm up poop alot!!! Hope some of this info helps. Sheri ps The little green machine with their pet stain formula is the carpet saver around here!

Thanks, The food he is on is hypo-allergenic, no wheat, corn or soy. Our Lab is highly allergic to wheat and has acid reflux (trust me I see Tyson's issue as a "This too shall pass" situation) it took us over a year and a half to find out what was wrong with Remy (Lab) and it was daily cleaning up his vomit NOT NICE. What is the little green machine? I've never heard of it. And the canned pumpkin really helped? I found one worm in his first stool after his first dose. They are disgusting and it is no wonder he was not feeling well.. On another note how do I post a picture below my name? Sorry I know it is off topic. Gotta go take the boys for a walk. Thanks again

The food he is on is hypo-allergenic, no wheat, corn or soy. You're probably right not to panic. But please keep in mind that both the allergens and the symptoms can vary. I know this because I have three animals with different food allergies and symptoms

We got Hotwire in may, and he just got over colitis and a huge tapeworm. Not fun. he may stay on the bland diet. Good luck. There are instructions on getting the pictures up in the forum under technical information.

I think I jinxed myself. It is now almost 5am and I have been outside twice with Hope. She usually has the stomach of steel, I am not sure what is going on. She will wake me up and tell me she has to go NOW! I just happen to have today off, lucky for me.

Tyson still has the Big "D". Through much research and advice from this forum and my vet. We have decided to try changing his food. My vet wanted to give him medication to help stop it however I kind of want to know what is causing it. We think it might be a reaction to some thing in the Medi-Cal Hypo allergenic food because he has become really itchy . We are in the process of switching both dogs to Natural Balance. It has none of the things that our Lab is allergic to and we hope it will help Ty aswell. Although he still has the Big "D" we have had no accidents in the house for over a week. So he can now control it and he is regular (like clock work). He is such a good boy he will go to the door and stand with his head against it if he has to go outside. We just love him to death. Makes me think "hhmmm ,maybe another?". Thank you all for your help I wouldn't even have known where to begin. Tara

Tyson still has the Big "D". ... We think it might be a reaction to some thing in the Medi-Cal Hypo allergenic food because he has become really itchy . It could take a while for things to improve. If you decide that you want/need to know what he's allergic to without more trial and error, you might try the SPOT test from Spectrum Labs, a blood test for allegies. It isn't cheap--the food panel is $250+GST--but I found it very helpful. And don't forget about treats. Even one treat a day can be an issue if the dog is sensitive enough to an ingredient.

I've got 2 dogs with the Big D this week! Taylor has Irritable Bowel so when she gets it, it's a bloody mess (literally). Poor girl has just improved after a few days or not sleeping (either of us). This morning I heard Kiki downstairs crying (which I just thought he was dreaming) and then I smelled it....oh yeah....that's no dream! I ran downstairs to huge piles. A couple trips outside, some pepto bismo and he's now resting under his new blanket I got him yesterday.
I agree that finding out what the cause is rather than the bandaid approach can be helpful in preventing future episodes.

Well, thanks to all for the advice. Tyson is on the mend (fingers crossed) He slept through the night not needing to go out (due to big "D"). And last night (Before bed) and early this afternoon (first one today) was normal. The food I was feeding Tyson had oat flour as the first ingredient and the food he is on now(as of Friday) has 3 types of meat and brown rice at the beginning. Thank-you all again for the help and advice. Tara
