Hello -
This was recommended by the vet against racoon and skunk bacteria from living in the city.
Anyone else living in the city get this vaccine yet for their grey or other dog? or at least heard or know anything about it? We were quoted about $60 by our vet.
I know it's not that much $$, but was just curious.
Thanks, Lisa

I wouldn't get it if Sy is not going around ponds, creeks or drinking out of puddles... at least this is what my vet told me. They recommend it if you go camping or if you hike in wooded areas. Anywhere there is water he can drink that is not clean.

It depends a lot on where you live. Four or five years ago, the clinic I use was not recommending lepto vaccinations because they weren't seeing cases. Now they are, so they recommend it.
The main reason for vaccinating is that lepto can be fatal. However, the vaccine doesn't (or didn't) cover all strains, and some dogs do not react well to it.
We are in the city, but walk on a trail next to a stream, and there are a lot of raccoons, and a fair number of skunks and other creatures, in the area. I decided the poodles needed to be vaccinated because they are sometimes off-leash; the hounds are not but they're done too.

It's a hard vaccine as well on your dog and unless you're in a more risky area or like Jen said, exposed to areas, I wouldn't get it. I think we over-vaccinate as it is and injecting more into our animals isn't always necessary (especially older ones).

thank you everyone. since sy only drinks from his water bowl and the kiddie pool we set up for him in our backyard, we can forego the vaccine. thanks so much for your feedback. lisa

I apologize for my ignorance but I am not sure what this lepto thing is about to be honest. We live in the country on a lake and have all kinds of critters around. My vet hasn't recommended this vaccination (she knows where we live) but is this something I should talk to her about?

It affects the liver and can be fatal. There are pros and cons of vaccinating and most vets (in my opinion) push to vaccinate. You may want to talk to your vet about it since you live near water/wildlife. Here are a couple links that will give you some info. and/or do a search and you'll find tons of info. www.labbies.com/lepto.htm www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dbmd/diseaseinfo/leptospirosis_g_pet.htm Hope this helps!

This summary is from petplace.com: Leptospirosis (Dogs) Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can affect both humans and animals, caused by a spirochete (spiral shaped bacterium) called a leptospire. It primarily affects the kidneys but can also affect the liver and other organs. The link for the article is: www.petplace.com/dogs/leptospirosis/page1.aspxMy vet is one of those pushing for vaccination. In her opinion, if you have raccoons in your yard, your pets can be exposed to lepto--drinking is not necessary. She is, though, more inclined to vaccinate (for anything) than others might be.
