Just got a call back from the Vet, Sal has a bad case of hookworm. I knew something was wrong as I have never seen the big D that bad before. My DH and I have had to steam clean three different rooms of carpets since Saturday night and hose down the yard to get rid of the puddles of poop. The Vet is putting Sal on Interceptor for 6 months(?) then wants to recheck 2 months after the Interceptor is stopped as well. Anybody have any advice? Also wanted to post this incase some of the other pups that went home after the picnic have it. I have to check my papers but the Vet asked if the pups are tested for Heartworm before they get adopted and I don't know off the top of my head (I'm at work and the papers are at home!). Thanks.

I responded on GT.
I'm surprised your vet didn't go with a dewormer? Droncit or Pancur, rather than the monthly stuff.

I was too - we got Sals heartworm back tonight - negative - hooray! So once again I asked a different vet tech and she said the same - I also researched it on the internet and the insert says for prevention and also for treatment of hookworm.?? I really hope it works -poor puppy.

Hookworms are pretty stubborn I would want a full strength dewormer first and then use Interceptor to prevent reinfection, be very vigiliant about picking up the waste asap, hook worms are pretty nasty

we had this same problem last summer and the vet said the revolution would take care of it..... long story short, we had to go back and get de wormer because it got really bad. I would just tell your vet that you want a dewormer to be sure, and be firm about it. no need for your pup to suffer for the next 2 months. just my 2 cents.

Just a quick update - thanks everyone for your responses - its great to have resources like you guys when there's questions! Anyway, Sal is doing much better - he is definitely a different puppy - he is so full of energy and has a greyt personality, he is a kisser and likes to steal stuffies and play - he even has Cuz playing and running with him a lot more. We still keep a constant eye on his poop but it better - no more runnies and now a normal amount a day!! Thanks again!

I have a related question. Does your vet usually test for all types of worms when the test or just one type at a time. Tyson was treated for round worms and I am just wondering if the vet would have checked for hook and whip worms as well? He also checked for giardia. Should I also have Ty checked for heartworm? Tara
