Just wondering if anyone has had experience with hookworms in their hound or other dog. Digby was diagnosed 3 weeks ago after noticing runny stool, coughing, and blood in his poop. He was retested this week and is negative, though poop is still runny and has bits of blood in it on occasion. he seems to have a relatively sensitive stomach anyway and runny poop isn't unusual but the vet thinks he may have an infection from the worm "bites" in his small intestine.
Just wanting to see if anyone has any experience with this. poor guy.. this is his second time with worms since we got him. first time was roundworm.
Also, do you find your hounds have notoriously soft stool? Is this a greyhound thing??

We had a lot of food issues when I first adopted Icarus and Atlas. Between allergies and intolerance, it was a nightmare. Avoid chicken... it's guaranteed to just come out as liquid. Lamb is easy on their tummies. Beef is what Bill recommends (Proplan Beef).
After I tried dozens of food types, from the really expensive (Eagle Pack Holistic) to the really cheap (Kirkland Brand), we finally settled on Technical Lamb Meal and Rice. They don't have allergies on it and it produces nice firm poops (all subsequent poops tend to be a bit softer, but that's normal).
Good Luck!

My first grey, Tex, had hookworms for over a year when we first got him. We would treat him and the stool test would come back negative but a month or 2 later he would test positive again...Aparently a negative post treatment result can be a false negative due to the life cycle of the worm and the mode of action of the medication. Also hookworm is difficult to get rid of (so we have been told). Tex also had a really sensitive digestive system and almost always had soft poop. Our 3 greys now eat Nutro large breed and have no problems with it. I often think I would like to try something more natural for them but I am too afraid to change their food.

Looking for small or next to no poop....go raw! Seriously, it's the size of bunny poop. Add in a Prozyme supplement and your grey's body will be absorbing everything from their food and eliminating next to nothing.

oooooooooooookkkkkkkkkkkkkkk I have a little problem.....I know for a fact that Wick has worms!!!!!! Now what can I do to get rid of them? At first they didn't seem that bad, like little to none, however this has been a couple of weeks now and they seem to be worse!!!! I was wondering if anyone knows about any over the counter medications that are safe for greys for worms? ? Is hook worm and worms the same thing??? His stools are firm nothing out of the ordinary. Poor Wick I hope someone has some advise they can give to help us out. Thanx, Amanda & Uncle Wick

Short rice-like pieces are Tapeworm. They do not go away on their own. There are others that you can't see. There are no over the counter meds for these worms. They need to be diagnosed by a vet.

In cases of hookworm reinfection is usually a result of hooks being in the soil and they are picking it up again by eating grass that they may be and they can also pass through skin, humans can also be infected this way. This is the reason dogs are banned from public beaches to prevent human infection. [glow=red,2,300]recent evidence indicates that infectious larvae can survive after emerging from feces for up to 4 weeks under summer conditions (perhaps longer in winter), [/glow] www.bayerdvm.com/Resources/homecare/handouts/HookwormsADOG_DVM.pdfSo to prevent reinfection you treat the dog with a dewormer, and pick up the dog waste immediately or least daily and you need to treat your yards if you can for existing hookworms or keep them off If your dog uses the yard then they should be on a heartworm prevention with a dewormer as well

Ok, well here's the scoop. We brought a stool sample to this great vet in Mississauga called "Avonlea". They tested it and it came back negative for any worms. But we know that he has worms!!! Well I waited and made sure after he used the bathroom again that he did in fact have worms......he did. So I called them back and they said that maybe the stool that we brought in didn't have worms. So now I have an appointment tomorrow with Wick and so that is $50 and then the medication that they perscribe. Along with another stool sample needs to be brought in. Man, this stuff sure can get costly! I mean the first stool sample to be tested was $40!!!!!!!!! $40 sure is alot of money for a bag a poo. lol. Anyways I'll keep you updated. Amanda & Uncle Wick

$40 is alot for a stoop sample unless they are doing a full workup on it. find out what it is they are doing and if it's just a regular stool test, I would start looking for a cheaper vet. Where do you take him?

Our boy also had his pooped checked last month and it came back negative, but I was certain he had worms. He was very lazy (more than normal) So I waited a couple of weeks and took in another sample. This time I took the first thing in the morning poop. anyway it came back with hookworm. I was told that you should not see hookworm only ring, round and tape. Gross all the same. Our boy was put on Strongidt which was approx $19.00 for several doses. It apparently tastes like bananas. easy to use and works really well. After the second treatment he pooped out a whole handful of worms and now he is back to normal, running around the backyard and sleeping better.

It's greyt that they all came out.. even though it was probably very gross to watch. Glad you persisted though. Sometimes those worms are tricky and as you said, Hooks and whips don't always show you that they are there... at least you can't see the worm itself.. just what it does to the pup.

Poor Gib and Fire
Stricker sends a big hug there way. At least the meds are not that bad to take, stricker freaked the first time I gave it to him, the second time he had no problem.

Amanda & Uncle Wick After reading your post, I am beginning to wonder about my vet's prices....poo sample, blood test (heartworm check only) = $159.00 + $58. (Interceptor)!
