Nauti, our first grey, has gone to the bridge today. This past week has been a very emotional one for us. For some months now, Nauti has been battling symptoms of Cushing's disease. Last Monday we noticed that his breathing was quite laboured and retching/coughing/gagging. We took him to the vet on Tue. His heart sounded good, so we had chest x-rays taken. They showed a mass in the lungs and an enlarged heart. The vet suspected a tumor, but was not 100% sure and said it may be fluid on the lungs, which meant congestive heart failure, not good but better than a tumor. She put him on heart capsules and a diuretic. If it was fluid, then he should improve in a day or two. On Wed. morning and afternoon he was somewhat better, his breathing was still fast, but not as laboured, but Wed. night he was worse again. Thursday he was worse and he had a bad night that night and doing that retching/coughing/gagging thing again. So we decided then that it would be best for him if we let him go on Fri. after Jim got home from work. He had not eaten much (he didn't want to) from Tue. to Thur. nor had he gone on any walks in that time. Today (Friday) he was somewhat better ( the vet said he could have good days and then more bad days, with the bad days getting worse) and ate a bit of kibble and ice cream. On the way to the vet we stopped at our local park and he enjoyed a last short walk, doing his sniffing and marking.
Run free, Nauti, with Heidi and all your greyhound buddies at the bridge! We love you and will never forget you.

Oh, Jim and Cathy!!!! I just happened to be online.. Reading this really knocked the wind out of me, and I am in absolute shock. Your poor Nauti has been through alot this past while, and I can only imagine how hard this decision had to have been for you guys. Please accept our deepest sympathies over your loss.
Run free, sweet Nauti..

We are so sorry. Nauti will be missed by so many, especially at walk when he'd remind everyone that we were there to walk not stand around and chat. We know how much your kids mean to you guys and if there is anything that we can do, please call. Godspeed Nauti!! We will miss you lots.

Jim & Cathy,
I'm saddened to read about your boy. He was very special, the first ones are. I remember our walk in Binghampton on the way back from Dewey. Nauti was the navigator. He went where he wanted to go and that was it - turned around and wanted to go back to the hotel!
He was a real sweetheart. You both have Larry and I's sympathy and cyber-hugs.
I'm sure Earl, Heidi and all the rest were at the bridge welcoming him.
Liz, Larry and Nimby

Cathy and Jim already have my sympathy, and many of us have also gone through the heartache that they are feeling now, especially recently. But I just wanted folks to know what special people they are. After adopting Nauti they just couldn't stop until they had opened their home and hearts to 6 greys. And after adopting Nauti they became dedicated supporters of GRA. They go out to the rescue once or twice a week (more often when Bill is away) for turn out, to clean out crates, sweep or power wash runs, scoop poop, weed and garden, do whatever they see thata needs to be done. They organize work teams to do regular clean up. Whenever there there is a fundraiser they donate something to the raffles or draws or silent auctions. They are at every meet and greet or parade, often organizing them as well. But that alone doesn't make them special. What does is that they take the dogs that no one else wants. The older dogs, the dogs that have been returned, the dogs that have health issues. They take them knowing that their time with these dogs could be shorter than most, and that their hearts will be broken. And yet, every one is loved and cherished. They have never stinted on their dogs care and have never complained about the vet bills or felt as if their huge brood of dogs "tied them down." I don't want to take anything away from the many others who are involved with helping the rescue, and many others have dogs as well, that no one else wanted. But Jim and Cathy are special. They truly have hearts that are bigger than most. Inge
