I just heard from another friend who has had to say good-bye to a beloved pet (not a grey, but loved none the less). I thought that I would post the poem that a friend sent me when Jana died (I think that he wrote it himself when his own dog died a few weeks earlier.) I read the poem before I scattered Jana's ashes. I found the poem comforting even though Jana never actually had a chance to grow old.
If it be I grow frail and weak
And pain should wake me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle can't be won.
You will be sad, I understand,
Don't let your grief then stay your hand,
For this day more than all the rest,
Your love and friendship stand the test.
We've had so many happy years,
What is to come will hold no fears,
You'll not want me to suffer, so,
When the time comes. please let me go,
I know in time you too will see,
It is kindness that you do to me,
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.
Do not grieve that it should be you,
Who has to decide this thing to do,
We've been so close, we two, these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.
And because so many of our dogs die from cancer, this poem that I often share with people who have cancer or lost someone to cancer.
Cancer is so limited...
It cannot cripple Love.
It cannot shatter Hope.
It cannot corrode Faith.
It cannot kill Friendship.
It cannot suppress Memories.
It cannot silence Courage.
It cannot invade the Soul.
It cannot conquer the Spirit.
It cannot steal eternal Life.
If it be I grow frail and weak
And pain should wake me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle can't be won.
You will be sad, I understand,
Don't let your grief then stay your hand,
