Hi there, We adopted our Grey't Boy recently and He is settling in quite well. We have a Crate for him, Door left open. Except when we go out for a while. We have been trying to be careful with leaving people food on counter. Tonight he found my son's Bagel. He went immediately to his crate. I did not try and take away. I stopped about 3 feet from side of crate and said Bad Boy in a deep tone. He began to show his teeth and growl. I am sure if I got closer he would have biten me. After this I decided to ignore him, when he came out of his crate I said again Bad Boy and walked away. He is normally non aggressive, did I handle this right? Dean

this is normal issue. He got something extra yummy and his instinct was to protect it. Its a good idea to train him to trade bad things for good. When he does this, tell him no or ta ta and offer him something he can have, like a treat. When he reaches for the treat trade for his possession.
If you haven't read it, get a copy of Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies. It helped me with many of our issues.

Jude got pretty feisty with us when we first gave him a rawhide bone (which, incidentally, gave both our boys Big D and outrageous farts so we've moved to cow bones). When we took it from him, we were leaving the house I believe, he snapped at us. Then he peed while looking right at my DH. He did that twice, once with DH and once with Me and both times we reprimanded him severely with our voices (No, bad, etc) Hasn't done it since. Although we do try to divert his attention first before taking the bone to help with the issue. Both boys are fairly possessive with each other...I hope they bond soon.....

With my two boys one wouldn`t even think about getting food other than what is givin to him,but the other will eat just about anything and i think he looks at counter surfing as his new found sport.as for eating things their not supposed to i`ve never had any problems taking it away and telling them bad at the same time.no showing of teeth, growling.

None taken, thats why I asked for the advice. I was aware of the food stealing, he is just normally extreamly sweet. To see his Teeth and Growel surprised me. He hasn't done it since, but we have been careful. I just told him I won't help him downstairs next time, he loves his walks so he should do better...lol

I don't know if you're aware of the greytalk(dot)com forum but there are a lot of real experience answers on there.
