Jana was entered in 2 Rally Obedience trials this weekend at the Greyhound Club of Canada's Labour Day Weekend show. She was disqualified because she refused to lie down while heeling. (She did it perfectly outside the ring). I showed her the score sheet so she could see how she had blown a perfect score if she had done the down. She really didn't seem to care. Then I found out that I could have given her as many extra commands as I wanted (at 1 point off each, I could have done 30 and still passed) It really pays to read the rule book. Anyway Jana just looked at me and said, "See, handler error." The second trial she qualified in 2nd place. It would have been a 1st, but (handler error) I forgot to have her sit during one exercise and we lost 10 points. Never mind. The rosette looks real nice on her bulletin board. And she really had fun in the ring, prancing along, tail wagging. The judge said that she was a nice wroking grey. And its true. She does like to work - on her terms - I have to make it fun, be upbeat, profuse with praise, and God forbid, don't forget the treats. In ge

Congrats to you and Jana!
You gotta get someone to take photos of Jana performing. I'm amazed that such a shy girl does such a good job in the ring!

Sorry, try again. Jana is my Jeckel and Hyde dog. Outside the ring she has her head down, her tail tucked right to her chin and shaking. I onc e heard someone at ringside talk about her, wondering why anyone would drag a dog like that to a trial. Then we get called into the ring. up comes her head, her tail wags and she prances along. I believe that she likes to work. I've learned to be upbeat and excited in the ring, and as much as possible move at a pace that allows her to trot. Then when we are supposed to go "fast" we increase to a gallop. For her that is a reward in the ring - legal even. I have no illusions. Cassidy works to please me. Jana works to please herself. No treats? Then I'm chopped liver. She always has fun in the ring - it just isn't always what she's supposed to do. I'll never forget the time she almost snatched a judge's sandwich practically out of his mouth. And I remember another c ompetitor say to a friend "Did you see that greyhound this morning? I'm glad she's not my dog." As I passed her to enter the ring I told her that "that greyhound" had already qualified twice that weekend (just not that morning) and that she would qualify now and that would be a title. "How is your dog doing." Not really nice of me. I knew her dog wasn't doing very well, but wasn't as feisty as Jana in the ring. Truthfully, more dogs would do better if their handlers were ore animated and made it fun. It is fun for Jana and me - otherwise we wouldn't do it. It costs money to compete. Inge

Jana - Too bad about that handler error. I'm sure she'll learn from her mistakes. Inge - Congratulations. I'm glad you're feeling well enough to get back to work.

We tried again this weekend. Now she is working in Advanced - all off leash. One of the exercises requires us to heel past 2 bowls full of appetizing treats 3 times. Of course, the idea is that she is supposed to ignore them and keep up with me. Remember the judge's sandwich? That little bowl of treats cost me $18.00 and a reprimand from the judge when I gave up trying to qualify and just tried to stop her from having lunch.

Jana tried again this weekend in regular obedience at the London Canine Assoc show in Tillsonburg. She was entered on Novice Intermediate. The first trial she was the only dog of 4 to qualify. The second trial I made a handler error in one exedrcise that cost us the trial. Sad because she had a perfect score in all the other exercises. Sorry Jiffer, I had a lot on my mind and forgot the camera. She even had a perfect score in the "stand for examination" exercise, where I had her stand and stay, then I moved 6 feet away while the judge approached her and touched her head, shoulders, back, ran his hands over all 4 legs, her tail and her ears! Its hard to believe that its the same dog inside the ring.

So.. how much would I owe you if I sent Tavi and Bia to live with you for a few weeks and learn a thing or two?
Great job - this proves that these dogs can be trained just as well as any other breed.... guess I need to stop slacking off with my guys!

Sorry, I've been away. My father has been very sick all of October and he died Nov 1st. I am OK, just very tired. To answer - I train myself and I go to classes. The dogs are easy to train. The handler needs much more instruction. We have had Jana 6 1/2 years. I trained at home for 6 months because Jana was very shy, then went to obedience classes and then to agility classes as well. 2 years ago, I got sick and I wasn't able to train. I started back again this fall, then Dad got sick. I foolishly entered an agility trial, but have only been able to fit in one practice. Jana knows her stuff, but I am not handling very well and I'm too slow. She's entered in Steeplechase which is very fast. Anyone who is not going to Bayfield is welcome to come and watch. There is no admission charge. Steeplechase is the last event of the day, so I'm guessing after 2pm. Its Sat. Nov. 10 at the Western Fair Agriplex. Inge

Inge, I'm so sorry for your loss.
We won't be heading up to Bayfield this weekend so I'll try to get out to the agriplex. I'd love to get Holly into doing something, she's an eager to please sort of dog. Hector...... well, "Charlie the Unicorn Imitation" isn't an event, is it?

Thank you. We'll need more than luck. Jana says she needs a handler who can move faster than a snail. Because I know that it is unlikely that I can finish a Steeplechase course in the alloted time, Jana and I have as a goal to run clean and have fun, and show the world what a rescue greyhound can do.
