In Jan. we moved to a 16 acre country property with woods, ravine and fields in a secluded spot on a gravel road with no immediate neighbours. We've been waiting for months for a guy to build us a fenced in couple of acres for our grey Jasmine as well as for our 2 pet goats and 2 sheep. Jasmine has gone for at least 3 walks per day on leash around our property for the past 7 months. A couple of times she got off the porch without her leash and came when we called her. This is now what baffles my husband and I. One day a couple of weeks ago we decided to see what Jasmine would do off leash. She had fun running around with our other 2 dogs and then would come to us whenever we called. We started doing our normal walks around the property with Jasmine off leash and she would stay near us or if she decided to chase a squirrel or rabbit, she would come back when we called her.
It has now been over 2 weeks and she always walks off leash when and only when we're outside with her and she doesn't take off! I don't at all advocate or even suggest for anyone to try this with their grey, but we are baffled as to why she is sooo good at coming when called and not taking off down the road or off of the property. Has anyone heard of a grey that can be off leash? She is so much enjoying lagging behind on the walks if she wants to, or running ahead to chase something but then always coming to us. One day she was too tired to walk to the back of the property and when we came back to see where she was, she was lying down waiting for us in the same spot we left her!!! We are in shock and wonder if it's because she's older now (7) or because she knows the property boundaries, or just a fluke.
We watch her very carefully when we're outside and I never want to mistakenly trust her totally, but we're really enjoying this (and so is she). Does anyone have a similar experience to share or is Jasmine the odd grey out?
