Barkley just ate a whole bird, a smallish one, in more or less on gulp, in the backyard..... As much as we pamper her, she is actually a dog, so I don't think eating a bird is anythinh to be immediately worried about, as far as her health, but do other peopel have this happen too? Wondering if the feathers are great for digestion....... Blech! Poor little bird!

I've never seen it happen here, although one of them caught and killed a bird, but didn't eat it. I suppose they could be doing it and leaving no evidence lol.
It certainly won't harm them, apart from the possibility of parasites, and that's easily solved with regular wormings - I do them twice, once half way through summer, and then again when it starts to get cold.

Our Banjo caught and killed a baby robin as it was just learning to fly. He was unable to eat it because we got him to drop it before he ate it. Then we were more careful outside with him. It is natural for them to attack movement in the bushes.

If you muzzle her when she's in the yard, you can help prevent her from eating things. I doubt it'll hurt her any. At most, she might throw it back up...

we often find wings in the backyard. It seems ours just eat the bodies and leave the wings behind. Not pleasant, but it's difficult to prevent and we haven't had any problems yet. They also catch squirrels but usually don't want to eat them. I don't want to muzzle them when they're in the backyard to have fun.

My Devin ate a bird right in front of me too. I have my backyard double fenced (the whole yard is fenced and then there's another fence within to keep the puppers out of the garden etc) so after that incident I moved the feeders to the areas of the yard that the greys don't go in. Devin didn't get sick so I think you and your guy should be fine.

So this is not that uncommon.................... I guess that is good to know!
The dog seems fine, she did not get sick at all, and so far no feathers or anything have "exited"......... so I guess her digestion seems to have handled things.... I really don't want to muzzle her in the yard so I guess it will be up to the birds to be faster than the dog!
It just kinda freaked us out! She better not eat the cardinal that lives back there!

Yup, Jack ate a young bird he killed about a year ago. We actually didn't see him do it. He threw up later that day.... When I saw the beak and some claws I knew Our boys were on an absoulte roll for a while (birds, squirrels, rabbits, etc). If it got into the yard, it was gonna be killed. When DH and I had had enough of the carnage, we started to muzzle them.

ours mainly go after the squirrels, but every once in awhile, they'll jump into the bushes and grab a bird. Usually the birds are faster but sometimes........ Then we find a few feathers. I had a dog once that brought a grass/garter snake in from outside in her mouth - alive. That wasn't a pleasant experience - to walk down the hall and see a snake coming towards me.

Genia your snake story made the bird episode seem pretty innocuous! So far no other brids have been eaten..... but it is very comforting to know that this does happen sometimes, and not to worry. She seems totally fine..... As lazy and docile and domesticated as she seems, it is almost weird to see her act like a "wild animal"

all of ours are lazy couch potatoes inside, but once they see a squirrel, they run out of the house like they were at a race. Fortunately the squirrels are able to get up the tree quickly, but every once in awhile, the dogs catch one. They certainly enjoy the chase though and sit under the tree hoping a squirrel will fall down.

Clandro caught a bird in mid-air and ate it a few months ago. He barfed it up about 1/2 hour later... it was the grossest thing I've ever seen him eat. Anyways, he's fine... no harm done!
