My greys, Dagny & Galt, say hare, hare...

I have meant to ask this question for years, but have always forgotten. Does anyone else have a female grey who frequently lifts her leg (like a male) when peeing? Eight years ago when I adopted Dagny, for my first 9 months alone with her she squatted to pee like most other female dogs. Only after I got her male buddy, Galt, did she start to imitate his pee style. Dagny will occasionally squat, but she more often will lift her rear leg to mark a tree, shrub or pole. It looks very strange! Did she learn this from watching Galt or is this natural for female greys? Then Galt sometimes does something odd too:there are times he won't lift his rear leg but stretch his entire body forward while letting loose. Anyone have similar experiences?

my male grey usually pees while stretching like yours, but he likes to pee where the females have just gone. None of my female dogs lift their legs, but they'd probably fall over if they did. LOL

For about the first 2 weeks we had Brandy, she would pee like a normal girl. But ever since then she will lift her leg and swing her butt around to pee on a pole, shrub, weed, cup in the grass, you name it. Actually her aim is quite good lol. I think she started to do this after watching our 2 males (at the time) lift their leg. It was quite funny at first because she would lose her balance and almost fall over, but she has now mastered it quite well ;D Nauti and Ed will just stretch and pee, while in our backyard. On walks they will lift their leg. ( I guess they don't want anybody who sees them, think they are sissy's lol.)

Rocco will stretch and pee and also lift his leg, but Meme pees normally like the proper little lady she is.

I've seen other female breeds lift their leg to pee. Rene's first dog, Maisey (a beagle cross) would squat and then slightly lift her left leg when she'd pee. I got such a kick out of it. All my boys alternate between "leaning" into a pee and hiking the leg.

Both Minnie and Edie will sometimes lift a leg, or at least back up to a bush or post to pee. It's a marking or covering pee. For basic relief, both use the standard squat.
In general, leg lifting/marking by females seems to be more likely as the dog gets older. Minnie started covering when she was about 1 1/2, and lifting her leg some time after that (4? 5?).
Male puppies usually lean/stretch. The lifting starts when they mature. I've read that some males never learn to lift. From what I've seen, most adult males will lean if they decide to go when a post isn't handy, and lift if they are near a post or wish to mark.

my white borzoi will squat to pee, but when she's done, she kicks up the grass with her back feet like males do.

Hotwire is usually too lazy to lift a leg, so he twists to pee on trees, Connor has to lift his leg-even if he is peeing on the ground. Hope will back up to trees and posts to mark, she sort of lifts her leg sometimes.

For me, it's the opposite problem. Roman pees like a girl and rarely lifts his leg I've attributed it to his laziness LOL

Banjo a 4 year old males goes both ways from what we have seen. I think it comes down to how he wants to do it at that time and place.

Georgia our first Grey used to lift her leg to pee ALL the time. She would also alternate legs and walk so it went all over the place!
Grace on the other hand is content to pee like a lady.
