Hi there! I'm new to this community and haven't yet adopted a grey since I'm in University right now and can't guarantee that I will have a fenced in yard or more than half an hour of free time a day to spend with a dog just yet. (soon...) I've been selfishly watching dogs come and go from the adoptables list for over 3 years and am anxiously waiting for the day that I'm settled in one location long enough and can finally adopt one of my own.
In the meanwhile, I've become mum to two bonded rabbits who love to run and play in the house. They are very friendly and social and loved the other dogs my student housemates had and the cat we have at my parents house. My question is essentially this: Is it possible or relatively easy to find greys that have very little prey drive and can get along well in a controlled home environment with rabbits as company?
I certainly realize there would be restrictions on their coexistence: I would never be able to leave them alone together without supervision, and the rabbits may have to have a designated area that a dog isn't allowed to be in to avoid any trouble. The rabbits generally don't go outside, so having them appear to be wild outdoor prey by accident shouldn't be an issue. I also do not really have a preference to the gender or the colouring of greyhounds (they're all so pretty to me) so I think temperament towards the buns would really be the only qualifier in the search to find a perfect match.
I'm mostly just wondering if that search to find a grey with the right temperament/personality would be long and fruitless, or if, with some patience and cooperation, it could very well be successful. Does anyone have any experience pairing rabbits with a retired racer? Or, maybe more appropriately, a failed racer? lol
Thanks in advance for any help/advice!
