I don't know if any other dogs like to go through the shopping bags, but ours thinks they're for him. When we walk in the door with bags, he has his head in them before we can get up the stairs. One day we had a lot of bags and put them on the floor until we could unpack them and he sniffed the bags and then pulled a rope toy out of one. How did he know it was in there and that it was for him? He left everything else alone.

Our big guy does that too! But he thinks EVERYTHING is for him.

ahh yes, the grocery bag piracy. one time Greely grabbed my fresh loaf of bread and ran around the back yard with it like it was a football, very funny boy. they also seem to know what bag has fresh meats or toy's as well, their senses are so keen.

Edie, AKA Dora the Explorer, checks all the bags very carefully when I set them down inside the front door. The others focus on the "good" bags, especially those from pet stores, but Edie/Dora checks them all. I don't have any pirates*, but I try to leave the best-smelling bags until the last trip into the house.
* Well, there was one incident: I bought store-brand diet cola, and the box split as I was trying to tear a bit off and put it in the cupboard. Without me noticing, Edie snagged one can and carried it into the living room. She wasn't rough, but those cans are very thin. During the minute or so until I realized that a can was missing and did a search, a lot of the cola was in the rug...

I'm glad to hear that my boy isn't unique. Our other dogs aren't as interested in the bags unless they can smell meat, but he goes through every one. He also steals bread if we leave it on the outside table when we're feeding the birds.

LOL
Atlas does this too. He'll shove his head into the bag as far as he can. On more than one occasion, I've ended up with all of my merchandise on the floor. It doesn't matter what is in the bag either.

Brandy is the inspector of our pack. When ever we come in with a bag she gets her head right in the bag before we are even completely in the house But what is the most embarrassing is when we are out on walks and we meet someone carrying a bag and we stop to chat, she will get her nose in the bag if we aren't watching her closely and even if we don't stop and we walk past close, she will stretch out her neck and try to poke her nose in the bag She can be a little devil at times. ;D

Joe always has to check out what it in every bag, it doesn't matter what is in it either. He's such a silly boy! ;D

Digby loves the shopping bags, and always recognizes the pet store ones, but he's actually quite a box pirate. we moved a year ago and while i was packing something into a box i noticed his nose in there - he grabbed something and ran to the family room with it, dropped it and ran back in. i went out to the family room and noticed he had a whole pile of things he'd collected from the box i was packing, while i wasn't looking. rascal!!
