I adopted Brianna UHL from GRA in April and she is lovely and affectionate and everything we want in a family companion. She really seems to need to play once in a while but I'm having trouble finding a toy that interests her. The first two toys I bought were squeaky stuffies (with squeaks inaudible to the human ear) but she only really liked to run after it and throttle them about, twice, maybe three times and then she was done. Forever. Then I bought her a rope toy, hoping she might play tug of war but she won't even chew on it or run after it. I've had it for months and it's as clean as the day I bought it. But she often shows signs of wanting to play, she slams in to a crouch with her butt in the air, tail wagging, moving her head around like somethings happening and playfully barking. She seems to need to bite something, and although she only gently puts her mouth over my arm, I'd rather that be a toy of some sort.
Does anyone have any ideas of toys she may like or that may interest her for more than a minute?

Our first grey loved squeaky stuffies and was so cute when we got him a new one. He'd squeak and squeak and squeak.
Thunder, one if our boys now, won't play with toys at all in front of us although we catch him periodically with one in his mouth or squeaking in another room. He's a closet toy player! Bruce loves stuffies with a squeak.
She may be playing based on what you describe. I'd keep tossing and giving squeak toys and some day she may play with it.

I have found that Light and Joker have different tastes in toys. Took a bit of trial and error to figure out their preferences. Joker loves larger squeaky toys that are somewhat loose and 'floppy'. He has his moments when he will play a solo toss and catch and seem quite happy hearing his own squeak session (occasionally Light joining in to prove the longest, loudest squeaker...lol). Light LOVES her dinosaur Nylabone! I have been known to drive distances when current one(s) are worn down and need replacement and the local PetSmart stores are out of stock. She seems very content working away on it for long lengths. (Vet notes it is great for her teeth too). ...see attached... i.walmartimages.com/i/mp/00/01/82/14/77/0001821477851_P321146_500X500.jpgI'm sure you will find the perfect pastime for Brianna... hmm-m-m...ever thought of a brother or sister for entertainment?!

Just reading your post again. I wonder if a ball would entice her? A tennis ball? Bruce is so keen on any movement (the sighthound!!) and will watch a ball go back and forth from me to the door/wall until he jumps in and grabs it. Just a thought!

Owen took many months to figure out how to play. He wanted to, I think - but seemed very tentative and unsure. He did the same thing you are describing Brianna as doing, butt in the air and tall wagging, but then just seemed to lose interest. Finally one day he picked up a long squeaky snake, and shook it and threw it around and had a great time. And since then he does that regularly with toys, plays really hard but only for 5-10 minutes. He is now playing tug of war with his fur brother too, which makes us very happy since his fur brother was used to having a playmate. Owen may have picked up some playing skills from Seamus actually, as he's the king of squeaky stuffy toys. Owen loves the long squeaky snake (from PetValu), and he also really likes the kong-like chewy bone, especially one brand "Bionic" (also from PetValu). Just fyi - the Bionic brand chewy is the only brand that my previous dog, a lab who loved to chew, could NOT destroy. He even tore a kong - I highly recommend Bionic brand for those dogs who usually destroy everything in 10 minutes. Anyway, give Brianna some time, one day something will 'click' and she will figure out what playing is all about!
