Hello Forum! this is my first posting so allow me to introduce myself, my name Is Jonathan and I adopted AMF Balloon about a month ago and she is settling in quite well. She is my first Grey and I am learning alot about the breed. I am a dog trainer and have delt with many many breeds but never a grey so this is new to me! I have re-named her to Cali as Balloon was not sticking well with her and me. She is settling in quite well except she is a whiner..I have been reading that this is quite common with greys am i correct? she whines all the time, when i talk to her, when she is laying on the couch and i call her name, when i look at her! is she just talking or scared or just communicating? I am having quite a bit of trouble with the sit as well. I can mould her into a sit position and then she begins to tremble HARDCORE, which i then feel bad and cuddle her..she is treat motivated but not when it comes to luring her into the sit. I would like to post some pictures but when i click the "insert image" icon it just does am i doing something wrong?

hi and welcome! - just thought i'd let you know that i have a whiner too - sunny whines when he's hungry, when he's looking for me, when he's lying beside me, when i'm making his meals, whenever! - at first i thought he may have SA or be somehow uncomfortable - but now i know it's just part of his charm! - rainy doesn't whine at all but he does an awful lot of teeth chattering! - and about the sitting - sunny came to us already knowing how to sit - he doesn't like to do it but he absolutely is able to - rainy won't sit unless he gets cold - i personally haven't any reason to teach him so we just let it slide - they both are extremely well behaved whether taking treats out of our hands or meeting strangers or walking in town -
good luck with cali and enjoy! -

Welcome Jonathan and Cali!
We understood "sitting" isn't physically comfortable for Greyhounds when they first retire due to the strength of their backend muscles. We have let Pasha take her time. After about three months with us she suddenly started to "sit" on her own. Since she is such a quiet and well behaved dog, we haven't seen the need to "train" her. She is retired after all!
After seven months with us, Pasha still gets very "scittish" from time to time and starts to behave like a very insecure dog. She still whines every time she is in the car (at least twice a day). I would think that Cali's whining is related to the fact that her entire life and routine have changed. Building her confidence and lots of attention and treats will likely help.

Welcome Johnathon and Cali! I don't have a whiner sorry I can't help there. With the sit I have had Ty for almost 7 months and he doesn't sit for a couple of reasons he is really tall and it looks extremely uncomfortable for him (so we are teaching him lay which is a sphinx-looking postion...it is going okay) and second I am unwilling to put him in the sit postion because his legs would shake too. Enjoy your new pup and most of all remember they are incredibly smart and she had you figured out long before you'll figure her out LOL!

Welcome, no advice concerning the whining sorry, but to echo the above statements sitting is tough for some greys, if she isn't comfortable you could try just a simple down command.

Edie has a good natural sit, but sometimes her back legs shake. For her, it's the surface. On grass, carpet, vinyl, and rubber she's fine. On pavement, she's improving. On concrete, she still quakes. What I did/am doing is just gradually build the time, using treats to get her to hold the sit. Neither of my greys sits as long or as comfortably as my poodles, but it's still a very useful posture for training, and one that they can hold long enough, with practice.
She's also a whiner. When she first arrived, she whined constantly. Most of it I ignored; sometimes I told her "quiet". She's much better now. I think that's partially because she's far more comfortable, and partially because whining never elicits a positive response. She still whines when she's uncomfortable ("I'm feeling poopal pressure") or impatient ("When's dinner?!").

I agree with Janis and Rainy. Dash is so well behaved as well that I don't have any reason either to teach him to sit. I have physically put him in the sit position, but he looked so uncomforable. So I thought, "Why bother"? The most important command to me is "come" and he is very good at recall as well. If we meet anyone on our walks he just stands quietly and patiently beside me until I am ready to move on. Such a good boy.

About the inserting image - you need to have your images uploaded to a site like photobucket.. and then do what meganm said with inserting the link/web address between the two s Tavi whines a bit, tends to be mostly in the morning when one of us leaves for school/work and the other one is still in bed. When thats me i just tell him to come on the bed and lie down and then hes quiet... he also whines in the car which is super annoying.... its funny, the first day we got him and were bringing him home he got in the car easily and just lay down.. now he stands the entire time and freaks me out that hes going to fall and hurt himself and then whines most of the way..... so i wouldnt be too worried about the whining... ohh except the high pitched ur hurting me whine like he gave my boyfriend the other day when he accidentally sat on his tail accompanied by the infamous Tavi stink eye

Welcome and Congratulations, Cali/Balloon is a sweetie!
We had a whiner, too. It did absolve with time and seems to be associated with being uncomfortable or nervous. I would ignore it when our guy did it.
As for sitting.... in my opinion, it's one of the hardest things to teach a greyhound. Orion, who was adopted September 2005, still hasn't learned to sit, and it's not for my lack of trying. Uber seems to be following closely in his footsteps. The easiest method to use on them is the "tuck and fold" method. It's best done with two people. One person issues the command and reward while the other, who kneels beside the dog, uses their "enormous strength" to tuck the rear end under the body using their arm (basically lifting up the back end, making the knees bend and pulling under). I have taught Icarus and Atlas how to sit like that. I was told that pushing or forcing downward on their backs is a no-no and can cause pain given the length of their body.

Hello there and congrats on Cali! She's an adorable girl! If you do a little digging into some older posts, the issues with greys and sitting has been brought up in the past. All three of our boys can sit now, but it definitely was NOT easy. I agree with Jiffer about the tuck and fold method. It is much easier than simply trying to apply pressure to their rear ends. One of our boys (Dave) looked extremely uncomfortable while learning to sit, but he did learn. As you've read above, not everyone feels the need to teach their grey to sit. It's a matter of personal choice.
None of our boys are really whinny. Stuey will whine occasionally when his bed isn't soft enough for his liking, but we ignore it.

My 2 greys learned how to sit & lay by example & watching & Jagger how to shake a paw. They watched our malamute at treat time, I use hand motion I'd lift my hand upward & Tori would sit and get her treat. Both Peanut & Jagger would watch, they would get a treat no matter what and before I knew it they were sitting and laying on hand command for treats. Jagger is a skit, if hears us by the treat jar he runs out sits & raises his paw all on his own, we will make him lay for them if he way ahead of Tori or make him shake the other paw.I guess the credit of teaching has to go to Tori for being great at commands and the treats.

Hi our grey (Minnie) whines too, usually if she sees other dogs or kids who she wants to meet but can't (ie if we're in the car or on a walk)
She does the whole teeth chattering thing and yawns, this I have read is a normal nervous habbit for greys. not sure what anyone elses experience is?
As for sitting, well sitting has gone out the window, Minnie will lie down when told and come when called so we're happy with that.
